So... do I have a water cooled turbo?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

So... do I have a water cooled turbo?

Post by The Pinkfingers »

Looking to Bruce for some answers here...

This thread (http://www.delica.ca/forum/throttle-cab ... -3046.html) brought up the possibility that there may be more to my "1993" Exceed than first meets the eye.

First was the lack of throttle adjuster. Here are the pictures once again:

Mystery Machine brought up the whole 1994 model possibility:
Mystery Machine wrote:Aha!

In June 1993 they released the '94 model year L300. I guess once a new year has started (i.e. Jan 1993) they can't call any following improved/updated models a '93 model year because of any 'non' updated ones sold before them, so they make it sound like you are getting next years model a bit earlier?? (I hope that makes some sense??)

There was very (VERY) little changed on the L300's between 1990 and 1993 except for some minor trim changes and things like seatbelts going to 3point.

In June 1993 when they launched the '94 model year L300 there were some significant mechanical changes.

Water cooled turbo
Totally revised glow plug circuit (uber quick)
Different cam belt (which makes me think there are other changes 'inside' the engine)
No hand throttle (I miss this!)
Different set-up on throttle/fuel pump (same basic pump)

I am sure there are more changes/differences too - I am gradually finding more out as I work on the car!

In answer to Jesse's comment - the new Mud Monkey doesn't have a hand throttle and I can confirm that any June 1993> L300's won't have either (except cars built before and registered after June 1993)

Easy done - just look for the water pipe from the back of the head/top of the block at the rear which follows around the side of the block and across to the turbo.
So I dropped by Jesse's and looked under Marshmellow, and there definitely seems to be a pipe on the Jammy Dodger that is not on his '93 Super Exceed. Sorry about the angle, but here is a picture:

Is this the pipe for a water cooled turbo?

If that's the case, then it perhaps the Jammy Dodger is a '93 built '94 model.

Can anyone confirm?

BINGO!!

You've got yourself a water cooled turbo there....no doubt about that one! This confirms that your motor is a '94 model year (manufacture of these started in June 1993)

A few other things to check if you fancy it? Have a look under the service hatch behind the drivers seat and take a photo of the glow plug relays. I'll be able to tell you if you have the 'mega quick' glow plug system. Also, on the dashboard, do you get a red warning light like this when you first turn the ignition on?

The other thing to look for is an LSD. All the '94 model year L300's I have come across so far have had LSD rear axles. I am not sure/can't confirm if this is an option or standard on these models, so please can you check to see what you have on yours? You might well have one fitted! :-D

Cheers for now,

Bruce.

Took a peek under mine when you left. No water pipe like yours has.

You've got the water-cooled turbo.

LUCKY ! :-D :M

Looks to me like your missing your flat road "cruise-control" Seriously, I suppose this means you have the newest delica in the Canadian fleet! Awesome. I wonder who has the oldest one...? :M :-D

So when looking for a Delica this engine would be better than a non water cooled turbo?

Hey, well that's pretty cool.

Erm, how do I access this service hatch? :?

Yes, that is there. What does it mean?

Jesse said I have LSD, but I'm not sure how he could tell.

Thanks for your help so far, Bruce and everyone.

So - next question - does this mean most of the Delica mechanics out here will not have experience with the 1994?

Erm, how do I access this service hatch?
slide the driver's seat forward, lift the carpet that is behind the seat, undo the wing-nut and open the panel. the glow plug relays are screwed to the rear wall of that compartment.
Yes, that is there. What does it mean?
that is the universal symbol for glow plugs, wait until that light turns off before starting the vehicle.

Yes, but it may not matter, for the most part the vehicle is the same, there are some minor differences, but anyone brave enough to work on a Delica in the first place should have no trouble working on this one too.

/\ /\ What he said /\ /\

That glow plug light should go out after only about 1 second and then you can start the engine. Earlier L300's didn't have this light and you have to wait for a 'click' from the relay before starting the engine. This click takes around 3-5 seconds which doesn't sound a lot, but seems a LOT longer now that I'm getting used to the new quicker system!

The LSD may still have the original white sticker on the filler bolt - or if not, with both rear wheels in the air and the transmission in neutral, spin one wheel and if the other spins in the same direction then you have an LSD. If it spins the opposite direction then it's an open diff.

As Roger has said, 99.9% of the vehicle is essentially the same and even with things like the turbo - it's pretty much the same turbo in 'principal' but with an added water feed to and from it. Working on the vehicle is no different to any earlier L300....and if a mechanic says any different then you wouldn't want him working on it in the first place. Walk away!
