IP bus and car stereo questions

i kinda like the stereo my deli came with:

notice the blue plug in on the back. i think its called IP bus. what exactly can i use that for? i understand it has something to do with ipods and maybe gps. perhaps laptops too?

the stereo is 4x50w i also have a 100w amp and a loaner 375w amp

i was just about to replace the stock speaker when i discovered only the rear are stock and the front are pioneers like the stereo.

i bought some cheap 50w 5 1/4" speakers for the rear, but considering i have a couple of amps perhaps i should go bigger? the loaner amp came with huge alpine bass bin. im going to mexico and i dont wanna bring that, so perhaps the 375w amp is overkill.

suggestions? recommendations?

The 'IP Bus' connector is a Pioneer-proprietary connector to allow the integration of various other devices: CD changer, television, VCR, etc. The connector came out more than 15 years ago, and seems more designed for the European and Asian markets than the North American markets (probably because they interconnected more devices to their car stereos than we did, until recently). With the advance/acceptance of the Bluetooth interface, this interface is pretty much obsolete, unless you have the devices that have the receptacle for the connector. You would have to use this 'hack' to utilize the IP Bus socket because there won't be an 'audio in' socket on the front of the stereo.

Also, if the stereo is a Japanese market radio, the frequency bands are wrong for the North American stations, which would mean you'll need a band expander. SOMETIMES, there is a switch on the inside of the stereo to switch from the Japanese bands to the rest-of-the-world FM bands.

that seems simple enough, but maybe easier would be just to hook up an fm sender.

i dont listen to FM much, except for CHLY, 101.7 nanaimo, so whatever band expander is handy should suit me.

An FM sender would work, but if the frequency range on the stereo is set to the Japanese frequencies, you'll still need a band expander in order for the sender to communicate with the stereo.

What is the model number of your stereo? I might be able to find a schematic to determine if it has the frequency switch. Of course, that would mean having to remove the stereo from the dash, but so would putting in a band expander (it connects to the antenna input).

EDIT: Now that I've more clearly read your last post, it would seem that you are already listening to the radio in your van. If this is the case, you won't need a band expander. Are you able to get a frequency range of 88.1 to 107.6 MHz? (or roughly that)

After a quick search, it looks like a single-frequency-range device, probably only for the JDM market. Most NA vehicles are either single-DIN or one-and-a-half-DIN which is why we have 7 or 9 inch screens which do double-contortion-fold-up to slide into the dash. Anyway, a band expander looks like the way to go if you're going to do the FM transmitter thingy.

And it looks like your stereo is a fairly new model too, judging by the manual I was reading which was copyright 2002! Sweet.

It looks like you press the 'DSP' button (digital signal processing), cycling through the various EQ settings until you get to 'CUSTOM1' or 'CUSTOM2'. Then press the 'BAND' button to cycle through the various frequency bands, adjusting up/down with the arrow keys.

SFC (sound field control) and BBE (Barcus Berry Electronics) are two types of preset audio 'adjustment' that give back to digital music some of the life it's lost.

No, I don't read Japanese, but there is enough English thrown in to be able to figure out what needs doing. Of course, it would be easier with the deck in front of me too, but that would take all the fun away from you then...

i got a usb fm sender for $20. the signal is crap. im gonna have to try a cig lighter/headphone jack fm sender

Why not try making one of the connector-cables like in the first link I sent you? That would be a direct signal into the system. The problem you're going to have with an FM sender is that it might not 'dial down' low enough to transmit on a frequency the radio can receive.

i swapped the usb for a ciglighter sender. it gives a clear crisp signal! i also manged to adjust the setting on my stereo. funny thing is i remember playing with that the first day i got my van, then i for got all about it!

im a DIYer type of guy usually, but i got a million things to do before heading down to mexico, so i left this one to the chinese laborers.

i also swapped the 4's and the 5.25's for 6x9s and boxes for them. ill be able to put the speakers wherever i want.
