difference between pre and post 91 Delica?
I am looking at getting my first delica van this weekend. It is a 90 exceed. I see alot of reference to 91-93 delicas. So far I've only been able to identify the different bull bar and head lights (slight variation to the nose). Is there any major drivetrain differences, etc. that I should be aware of?

No. The first non-trivial differences are with the 1994 models, which have (among other things) a revised glow plug system and a water-cooled turbocharger.

This may or may not matter to you, and is not related to the drivetrain, but the rear and middle seats on pre 92's don't have shoulder belts, or the side impact beam in the door.

You might like to check this post, http://www.delica.ca/forum/delica-model ... s-857.html
It's more about model difference than years but still interesting.
Also, the Delica manufactured after Aug. '91 will have a 3rd brake light, some additional interior light (tail gate, front cargo...), the captain chairs have adjustable arm rest, the rear seat slide back and forth (and tilts)... so a few more changes. Also, the earlier model (90's and maybe 91? will only have 2 pods on the dash vs. 3 for later model. Might also depend on the trim level.)
Post Aug. '92 will have 2 "dimples" below the rear hatch window to allow water escape. They help a lot with rust prevention as it's fairly common to find rust there on pre-92 models.
I like the look of the 90's with the square headlight (much cheaper to replace...) but the interior of post 90's is somewhat better. Either way, they are great vehicles!
Enjoy your new ride!

The captains chairs on a '90 slide further back than the newer version, I think b/c there are no shoulder belts to worry about. There's also no plastic exterior trim, all metal fenders.

Congrats Meanman,
Always good to have another Delica in Maple Fudge
Oya, JW
As far as the seats sliding back. Run you hand down the track of the captains chairs. There is a bolt on the side of the rail that prevents the chair from sliding all the way back. I think its a 12mm.
( Thank Christine for that lil tidbit)

The throttle lock is changed out for a different style choke (some kind of wax-controlled thingy) in the '93 model. There was another change to the engine, but I forget what at this time. Mardy?
Most of the rest of the changes were just trim-related.

The seatbelts were mentioned but I just want to reinforce that it has been a significant issue for me because I have kids in car seats. Contemporary child seats will work with lap belts but this is not ideal set-up and the rear-most lap belts are kind of a pain also because they don't retract. Had I known at the time of purchase I would have sought a newer model if only for that reason. Oh, and the captain chair lap belts, do retract, but don't lock in the same manner as the ones we know which again makes them a PITA when using kid seats.

That can easily be fixed. All they did was run a bolt through the track to prevent it from sliding all the way back. I just removed the bolts. But, because of the shoulder belts, when I have passengers back there (rare) I make sure they don't have the seat slid all the way back.jwfchase wrote:The captains chairs on a '90 slide further back than the newer version, I think b/c there are no shoulder belts to worry about.

I did notice the bolts but hadn't taken much of a look at what is needed to remove them. Personally that location is working for me because I usually keep the reaer bench folded up behind the Cpt. chairs.

jwfchase,
You'd be surprised how useful removing those safety bolts is, you just need to remember to keep the seat forward a bit when someone is using it. I did that mod when I fixed my captain chair wobble and that extra 10" makes a big difference when camping, loading, using the rear... It's one great 5 min. mod...

Did I not read somewhere on here that the shoulder belts can be retro'd onto an earlier van?torchard wrote:The seatbelts were mentioned but I just want to reinforce that it has been a significant issue for me because I have kids in car seats. to do it safely would require MUCH work, the area is there but it isn't strong enough.Meanman wrote:
