you'll have to get under the van just behind the driver's side front tire. there will be a cylindrical housing with 2 spring clips to remove the cover (accessed from the bottom). then you will see the bottom of the filter being held in place by a wingnut. undo the nut and the filter will drop out.

its an easy job to swap in a K&N Cone filter, it will sit in the area where the air intakes meet up , next to the power steering fluid res, so if you did mess up the case for the stock air filter you can still change it out.

The filter is located underneath the vehicle and behind the driver's seat (right hand side). There are a few clips that get released to remove the cover.

Just a note that if you're going to use a K&N or any other washable filter (there are several brands on the market that are virtually the same thing), then you must at least use an oiled foam pre-filter to keep as much dirt as possible out of the system.

To get better flow (often from far less filter surface area) K&N type filters must have a much larger mesh/filtration size. As a result, they allow particles to pass through the filter that would otherwise have been stopped by even a very cheap paper filter. The downside to particles of dirt entering the intake is rapidly increased wear of internal engine parts and erosion of the compressor wheel on the turbo.

Mitsubishi provided for a really good engine air filtration system on the Delica with a very large paper filter that has cyclonic action. Before you "upgrade" please do some research on the subject so that you're well-informed and can form your own opinion through the experiences of others.

Hope this helps.

Best way to tell if your air filter is really dirty is how much crap is caught in between the paper folds nearest the centre: if it's completely black, probably time for another filter.

With the 'cyclonic action' of these filter housings, a lot of the bigger stuff will fall down into the trap at the bottom, which can just be emptied.

I've been changing my filter about 10000km, if that's any help.

Bet in PG the Donaldson is readily available. I picked up two in Smithers. The Donaldson is used as a secondary air filter in some logging equipment, so is readily available in logging towns. (Info according to a top secret source who I won't name as a Deli owner in Houston.)

You have a 4D56T engine, T as in Turbo. As for checking your filter ~ a new one should be snow white. One way of checking is to place a lit light inside the filter then look to see if you can see said light through the filter. The less light you see the more you should replace it.
