The most diabolical setup was somebody whose wifi was wide open, and anybody could connect to it. If the owner connected, everything worked fine. If anybody else connected and attempted to surf the web, all the images were blurry. A couple of URLs: http://www.ex-parrot.com/peter/upside-down-ternet.html http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/ ... ls/6347/1/

I'd give a great deal to eavesdrop on some of the tech support calls... :-)

Ohh, this is just great, Laura. I am keeping my wifi wide open (believe in open source and all that stuff), and so am definitely going to check it out.

Thanks,

Always put encryption on your wifi router.

Otherwise you may as well post all of your private pictures and files from your computer on the net for everyone to see.

Once in an open wifi nw, getting into someone else's windows OS is easy.

Be secure.

also there is the fact that people doing very illegal things on the internet love to use open wifi connections so it can't be traced to them, but you can get a knock on your door from the RCMP about fraud, kiddie pr0n and the like, sure you wont go to jail but it can throw a monkey wrench into your day. Why make it easy for dirtbags to go undetected?

With WIndows, indeed... but not when I am on a Mac, with a very solid firewall... ;-)

Its funny how people in the IT industry also tend to be Lovers of all thats JDM..

I myself am Systems Admin/Technical Services Coordiator for Medium to Large Global Company Based out of Surrey..

Anyways..
my Thoughts..

for Wirless Router The telus Provided one is Junk.. I hate it.. I had it, and ditched it.. Picked up the Old linksys ADSL one from a Garage sale, hooked that to..

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... ture=CISCO (In my opinion the best Router out there)

Use that Router mate it with this firmware

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

Boost the Internal Amp, use whatever Security is your preferance, and Done..

Create Secure Vlans, that have open limited access for the Family members that stop by.. So nice.. Life is good..

as for ISP. At home i use Telus..

at work I use Telus..

Home i just have Basic ADSL however i get Great speeds and never any down time.. (I live in Langley) Real work Download speeds 500Kbs a Second..
Telus also never complain about Bandwidth, Average Month i get download 100 - 300 Gigs.. they never complain..

At work we have a Dedicated Fiber optic Line, 50Mbs both ways.. (This is needed for access to the other offices)
My Backup ISP at work is http://www.metrobridge.com/ with a 30MB up and down, via wireless link.. So if telus doesn go down, we fail over to that..

anyways.. i rambled on..

Im done..
Its all about the Right Way:
