'92 delica won't shift into OD

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

'92 delica won't shift into OD

Post by airborne_4 »

A BIT OF RELEVANT HISTORY: The Tranny stopped shifting into overdrive, i took it to a shop which specializes in delicas and they flushed the tranny, with no avail. Then they tested the od solenoid which apparently "returned a faulty reading". Unfortunetly shop hasn't been able to locate a new od solenoid for me yet. So I've started to look for myself with no success yet however in the process was told by a parts supplier that he rarely hears of that solenoid going and he questioned the diagnosis so i started to trouble shoot this myself; I tested the temp switch by checking for continuity between the switch terminal and the engine block and with the engine warm there was continuity. I inspected the kick down cable and found that the cable stop was about 1mm out from being "seated" while in the rest position. The cable wasn't what i would concider to be taught but wasn't sloppy either. Only thing i could think of to see if it was preventing the upshift was to manually pull the cable while cruising at around 60km/h (where it would normally upshift) and in doing so the tranny did kick down (can i assume that means it wasn't preventing an upshift?). I am not sure if this next one is relevant since i haven't been able to identify it yet but anyway... associated with the throttle linkage there is a cylinder shaped spring loaded pin switch with a single wire coming out of the back of it, at full throttle the pin gets pressed in. To test it (after checking for a current) first I tried driving with it disconnected, then with it grounded, either way it made no difference (still wouldn't up shift to od).

I haven't had time to actually locate the od solenoid although i'm not sure what "faulty reading" to look for since the only way i can think of to test a solenoid would be to remove it put the appropriate voltage to it and see if it's working...

Also i did double checked the tranny fluid level.

Any input will be appreciated!
~If there is something else i should check please school me on it
~od solenoid location would be great (what side of the tranny / best way to access it)
~who i can go to to get a new or even used od solenoid (in case that is the problem)
:-)

Please read my topic http://www.delica.ca/forum/overdrive-on ... -2129.html.
All the OD solenoid does is switching OD off. In my case it did not work and that was why the tranny did not respond to the OD button. It is easy to replace the solenoid from another tranny to see if yours is faulty: no mechanical skills required. :-D :M

Thanks for the reply and I read your topic, if i understood correctly you were unable to get your overdrive to turn off when you pressed the od on/off button right? However my od will not come on at all not under any conditions. The tranny only shifts up to 3rd. Also I don't have access to another tranny to swap out the od solenoid. I'm really hoping someone can advise me on where to get one new or used. I'm sure i can figure out where it is on the tranny, but a little guidance wouldn't go unappreciated :-)

that switch turns off the aircon pump at full throttle. not related to gearbox.
