L400 OBDII or EOBD compatible?

Post by Van Diesel »

Has anyone connected any kind of scan tool to an L400?

I was interested in the ScanGuageII. It works with OBDII or EOBD compatible vehicles.

Also, will North American computer scan tools work on the L400?

Thanks.

As far as I know, the L400 doesn't have a computer to connect to...

These are good old fashioned diesels.

Looking on the UK website, I found a post regarding error codes generated by the L400:

http://www.mdocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopi ... 7e67f22a8b

Apparently if you short out one of the wires in the diagnostic plug, the A/T light flashes the appropriate error code.

I can neither confirm nor deny that it works; I'm still waiting for my L400 - Mardy's bringin' her over on the boat as we speak (type).

Yup. And that's what's great about them. :)

My 93 Paj has the OBD connector, so I hooked up the scan tool to it, just for fun, and the guage practically shrugged and went "huh?" No info came through whatsoever. Maybe it needs the proprietary Mitsu scan tool (MUTII or something I think?).

Hi All

Before I received my 400 I noted in the pictures that it had what looked like an OBD connector. Since at that time Princess Auto were selling their Scan Tool at half price, I bought one. When the beast arrived, I tried the Scanner. It connected physically but the Scanner didn't recognize the Deli. Returned the scanner...

Thanks for the info.

My van won't be here till next month so I'm trying to figure a few things out before I actually have it to physically look at.

I'm interested to know a bit more about the "simplicity" of these diesels as compared to a typical engine that is produced nowadays. Does anyone have or know where some info like this might be?

The wikipedia link for diesel engines talks about how it all works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine
Our delicas are indirect injection diesels, with mechanical injection pumps.
"modern" diesels tend to be direct injection with sophisticated electronic injection systems.

Read the sections on "indirect injection" and compare to the sections on "common rail direct injection", and "unit direct injection" which "modern" diesels use.

We gain reliability and simplicity of maintenance at the expense of efficiency, and consistency.

I read somewhere that standardized scan tools didn't come into play until 1996 model vehicles. I think that goes for all vehicles.

The scan tool from Princess Auto actually says 1996 or later. The codes on the UK Deli site were in reference to a 1997 L400.

Hope this helps,

As I said, can't personally say if the flashing codes on the A/T light works, but the guy Lewis on the UK site who made the post owns a 1994 L400, so I assumed that the codes were from such a vehicle. Unclear what if any differences there are between a 94 and 97 as far as engine controls go.

It does seem that if you disconnect the battery for a while, the codes reset themselves, so if an ECU glitch is causing you grief in terms of running the vehicle, might be something to try.

But as an earlier poster mentioned, I think these are much more rudimentary beasties that a modern direct-injection diesel setup.

Tony
It appears that the 95 delicas are still MUT 2 units and OBD 2 comes in possibly 96 or 97. Also a problem is the connector. My under dash connector needs a 16 pin connection. Even though the OBD 2 scanner has the same size connector it still doesn't talk to the diagnostics system.

Good luck

Depending on your scan tool, you may need a cable adaptor.

My evoscan came with a batch of cables, one (1.3U) is for the 16pin hybrid plug for the following applications:
Mitsubishi Eclipse/DSM (1995 and 1996 support Hybrid MUT Protocol)
Mitsubishi 3000GT (Hybrid MUT Protocol)
Mitsubishi Eclipse (Hybrid MUT Protocol)

Off topic/On topic: Tony's post is over 2 years old in the other thread. :-D

MODS/ADMIN: can you please merge these three threads together as they are all the same topic?

The OBD2 you mentioned in your PM won't work on my "95"delica. Thanks though.

You make no mention of your Evoscan being able to read the Delica trouble codes? That's an expensive tool.

Can it be used to read my "95" delica gasser trouble codes?
thx

Hi Wayne

I mentioned it in the other thread. Gets confusing switching between them. The evo is not cheap but over time has paid itself off at our shop.

I'll spell it out plain and simple this time.

Can your Evo read my "1995" delica trouble codes?

Yes. Have used it on two. One 95 and one 96. 95 plug is solid black. The 96 was black outside with red innards. Both use the hybrid MUT Protocol comm.
