Stereo nasty!

So i was cruisin in my new deli today...



when i realized that i still had the lousy factory japanese radio.


MAN! i HAVE to do something about this.

what have you guys done? what kind of units have you installed?
pics encouraged... of course.

I recently changed mine and have an extra cable connector for the connection to the Delica speaker connectors. I bought one locally to test and when I ordered my stereo they give you one with the unit. You can have it if you want.

I use my MP3 player connected to the the audio stage unit in the back, my player also has a radio in it but I never use it.

I have a pioneer head unit (with usb connectivity)with a set of alpine type R 6x9's in the back and I swapped out the in dash speakers with smaller type R's as well. While still a very entry level system, it is light years ahead of what was there. It's also nice to get the rear 6x9's up to ear level, and not bury them somewhere in the back.

I made a few extra of these when I made mine, so, If you have a crystal light roof model, I have one in walnut (pictured below) available now. Here is the original post from this if you are interested.

The key thing to look for is USB and MP3. You can get cheap 10GB thumb drives that will hold a lot of MP3s. Then you don't have to worry about hooking up your MP3 player everytime you get in the van, and you don't have to stress about them getting stolen.

I can't remember what I put into my van, but I did look for something that either had a remote or the main control knob in the middle or on the right of the console. There are a number of RHD-style stereos available in our market, primarily because the manufacturers are Japanese and it's just simpler (read: less expensive) to make one faceplate than two different ones, this according to the stereo guy I bought my last one from.

Consider changing the speakers in your van too. While the Super Exceed had the better quality speakers, the cones still deteriorate after 15+ years, and this is what I found in my van. None were broken, but there were quite worn, and a change-out all-around made for a 'cleaner' sound.

And one of my favourite songs to test a new stereo setup is, of course, "Keep Hope Alive" by The Crystal Method: wicked intro and then a pumping beat throughout the whole of the song. It's the opening song for the movie "The Replacement Killers" (which is also, by the way, a wicked movie).

My original stereo was a Pioneer, so I figured Pioneer is Pioneer so of to Canadian Tired a grabbed a cheap Pioneer on sale. Brought it home , pulled out the old one an plugged in the new one. I did not need the plastic outer cover that comes with the ne

Not sure if the harness was original or not, but she worked. I swapped out the front paper cones with 4 inch Infinitys ( highly overpriced) and a cheap set of 6 inch in the rears ( original was 5 inch) It did require cutting the metal plate the speaker bolts on to but a metal jigsaw took care of that.

There is a thread on here for removing the rear panels ( a pain due to brittle plastic). I got fed up with trying to save them and ended up making new cards for the space.

the space between the speakers just screams for a storage space with a door or something... LCD screen maybe??

Unfortunately, i don't have a crystal roof. i guess when i bought my deli, windows in the roof weren't a priority.
if you had a unit for a high roof, i might be interested.

yes, i have been looking at head units for the USB option. wish i could find a cheap unit with a USB and AUX in in the rear of the unit. i hate messy cables.

i was curious to know what harness to use as the guys in the local future shop didnt know.
is it a pajero harness or something?
they also weren't sure as to what kind of 'din' to use either.

have any of you guys got FS or best buy to do an install? i guess im kinda paranoid, and im afraid they might break the dash or something...

how hard is it to take apart the dash, and remove the radio. are there any photos or instructions for dissassembly?

Before we learned them thar codes, we bought the Scosche wiring harness from Walmart (20 dollars ish) for Dodge Colt & Mitsubishi 1991 (same yr as our deli), works fine.

Since the deli space is a double din, there were several posts on what to do with the extra din. i recall Paul Mararmeisto wrote about his CD like pop-out double coffee cup holder from ebay, but sadly it turns out not to be strong enuf to hold 2 stainless mugs. We put in a ham radio there.

Jay covets the double din stereo with a small DVD screen in to play movies, but I say camping is for roughing it, hence my microwave and electric blanket are justified but DVD's are not (plus I fear other delica campers would huddle like Zombies outside my TardisDeli to watch DVD's and squish their envious little faces and dirty fingers against the windows).

Stereo removal does NOT require undoing dash, just control yr destructive urges on your brand new baby. Contort yrself underneath the dash, I think it was 3 screws to undo then can slide radio forward to reach behind to undo the harness.

Jay will help you do yr stereo install for a steak dinner, he loves doing electrical, and has all the tools. But be warned, you'll learn a lot, then he'll show you other neat electrical things to add to yr deli (proper 12 volt power outlet, extra lights, built in battery charger, inverter, microwave, etc) soon you'll be considering the built in DVD in the roof to watch while lying in bed. Come spend a couple days, he'll chat your head off about cool delica stuff and then he'll get other local deli dudes over to show you more ideas for mods.
