Does your Delica Shake?

I just bought a 93 Delica Super Exceed (fully inspected) and I notice that the vehicle, and particularly the front cab and steering wheel, shake/vibrate quite a lot when the engine's turned on - most notably when the vehicle is idling (the shaking settles a bit once I start driving).

I'm just wondering - is this normal on these vehicles? and, if not, what might be the issue?

FAQ: shot engine mounts, too-low idle speed. Pop the engine hatch and see how much the engine moves when you gun it.

I'm putting the string "FAQ" in such answers, and encourage other to do the same, to make it easier to search for them.

What RPM does the tach show ? Normal is about 750, anything less it will vibrate somewhat. Like Laura said - look under the skirt and see.

As far as inspected, what what it inspected for and by whom ? Was it compliance inspection or an actual go over it by somebody who knows the mechanics of it?

The best thing for you to do is what Ive told others "Read til yours eyes bleed" There are countless threads on just about everything youve mentioned. And Laura's idea of FAQ is a good idea, she's not being Bzitchy, but it does help in doubling or even quaddrupling questions that have been covered.

The only annoying part of that is that the forum's internal search engine can't search on something only 3 characters long, it needs 4. So you would have to use google and add the site -- can't remember exact syntax.

About nine months after purchasing my Deli, I had a similar issue. Ran perfectly fine but then started getting rough.

I took it to CVI and they said I needed new injectors . Got new injectors and a DeliTune at the same time and it has run like a champ ever since (6 months ago).

YOu may just have dirty injectors and need them to be sonic cleaned by the guys at CVI.

i had a shimmy in the front end of my deli when i bought it.
andy disclosed to me that it needed an alignment.
i went into westcoast alignment, and they replaced the tie rods(they were sloppy), and aligned everything.
she runs like a dream now.

Delica engines have balance shafts that make them very smooth.

At 2.5 litres the 4D56T engine is big for a four cylinder engine, but with balance shafts it's just fine. See, for example, http://www.autozine.org/technical_schoo ... mooth2.htm

Your friend is correct, although for the wrong reason: it's not greater compression (although that is correct compared to gasoline engines), it has more to do with the greater amount of reciprocating mass. Diesel-engined pistons tend to be bigger and heavier in order to withstand to compression/combustion forces, and all that mass moving up-and-down will transmit out of the engine block to the frame, unless you have good shock mounts - check those (were they changed when the vehicle was imported). Check the engine mounts and the transmission mounts. Suspension system will also affect shakiness: if your suspension or turning system is loose, that will increase the amount of shake you'll experience when you start your van. Also, your balance shafts may be an issue, but that would mean you experience the shaking all the time.

Cooler temperatures (read "winter") will affect the lubricity of the engine oil, which will affect frictional forces, which will increase shaking, at least until the oil is warmed up. Normal for winter, but can be alleviated with a lighter grade oil or synthetic.

First of all, nobody has yet determined if he even has a problem, or if this is simply what a diesel does, secondly, inspections don't look for that sort of thing, they look for safety issues, a bit of vibration at idle hardly qualifies!

A little vibration is normal at idle. No worries.
It cleans up as the rpm's increase I'm guessing?
The tach is the gauge that shows the RPM.
The big round gauge next to the speedo (speedometer ;) )

What does the tach show at idle for you? (how many rpms)

The Miss Lil' Bitchi shakes only when she is cold . This is when I engage the choke. While I am warming her up I will set the choke to around 1100 RPM. My engine idles at 750 RPM, but if she is cold then she might idle as low as four or five hundred RPM... then she shakes.
