very nice, would it be a problem if someone wanted to buy 3 instead of 2? I'm a bit paranoid about putting heavy stuff up there, not because I think your racks are weak I'm worried about the rain gutters, I would rather spread the weight out over 3 racks.EnviroImports.com wrote:

EnviroImports.com wrote:no problem at all to do 3, just more money for a third one, the issue with the L400 over the L300 is the van is fat in the middle, so the rain gutters are not in a straight line, and they are wider in the center than the front or back..... the above pics are also of a SWB.
Why would you need 3 ? Will you be throwing an elephant up there ?loki wrote:EnviroImports.com wrote:no problem at all to do 3, just more money for a third one, the issue with the L400 over the L300 is the van is fat in the middle, so the rain gutters are not in a straight line, and they are wider in the center than the front or back..... the above pics are also of a SWB.
ah so the third would need to be custom, unless the hight is adjustable on them but it doesn't look that way, I imagine you went for strength instead of the off chance someone would be weird like me and want 3 :)

ya so I'm just paranoid, I'll get over it, and hopefully I will be getting basket and cross bars from you at some point :)EnviroImports.com wrote:I can do 3 or 4 or 5 , its up to you, my 1x4's from last year held 1120lbs (evenly distributed ) with no basket, as we tested one with a half block of concrete and it had no problems, if you look on my welding page on my site you will see the 4x8 rack I made for Charles, I had Me 185lbs, friend 265lbs , brother 195lbs all on the roof of a delica packing out gear for a trip to Crankworks bike trip, all suported on 2 cross bars, on a L300 delica the cross bars dident even bow, and the saffari rack dident even know we were up there.
I could see your desire for 3, but what it comes down to is what your putting ON the rack, I build my baskets to spread any weight, supply your own and its up to you. I know everyone overloads their stuff, but rain gutters are actually VERY strong...
You buy it, I build it...

I have an L300 atm, but I'm getting an L400 soon.EnviroImports.com wrote:Lol,
do you have a l400 or l300?
Same price for either but the L300 is a different width.

Well, from my past experience with custom roof racks I wouldn't go with aluminum crossbars anymore. Specially with the soft aluminum which has been used. The bent quite a bit and after a while the crossbars were slightly twisted. There was NO WAY you can step on them or have something heavier on your roof. The basket out of aluminum is fine, but not the crossbars. In the end I went to Jesse (Parkside) who did a very nice job in proper steel crossbars, which where actually not that much heavier and WAY stronger.loki wrote:sort of, me :). At 225 plus all the stuff I'm strapping down and what not, I always felt a little on edge up there, and the gutters where the part I feared breaking the most. I suppose it's just a weird fear that is totally unfounded and the extra cost will most defiantly win out but I was curious none the less. there is also the possibility of putting a full length basket on a LWB but I'm betting it would be better/cheaper just to get it built in one custom piece like some of Noel's past creations but having it on 3 or 4 bars would allow you to remove the basket and use the bars for other roof rack attachments.
The crossbars that you had originally Felix were good, but not as strong as Noel's standard one's (1x3/1x4's).fexlboi wrote:Well, from my past experience with custom roof racks I wouldn't go with aluminum crossbars anymore. Just half true, the strength was a little week from the beginning. After the tire and equipment came up they were bent and that was before the cleaning up.jfarsang wrote:With them sanded/shaved down, all the initial strength went out the door.
Jesse pretty much just mimicked the original design except with steel. If the welds would be shaved down on the steel bars, it would loose it's integral strength as well.
