Cylinder Misfire???

Post by riverdude »

Hello there folks, it has been awhile, my last contact was from mexico last winter, great trip, no mechanical problems but a longggggg drive there and back.

My delica is producing a louder than normal idle noise from the lower left hand side of the engine, had the neibourhood mechanic check it out, he said that all the belts pulleys were solid as were the motor mounts. He thought that it could possibly be a misfire in the number one cylinder. The noise is louder when the engine is cold and absent when driving?? The mechanic is not a delica pro by anymeans but i said i would ask the collective and we could possibly work through it together.

Any one else encountered somthing like this or possible causes for a misfire; injectors, fuel lines ........

thanks

the dude

possible causes (possibly in order of likelihood?):
- clogged/dirty/otherwise bad injector
- compression leak in that cylinder (loose injector or glow plug, worn rings/piston/cylinder
- cracked head/head gasket

minor versions of any of these would go away at higher temperatures or speeds.

Could also be a leak in the manifold gasket - I test drove a Diesel Surf a few years back that had such a leak, and it was loud as batshit.

Not that batshit is very loud, but you get my drift.

x2. Either that or an exhaust leak right near the engine.

Can you confirm that the "lower left side" is the area under the injection pump and not the other side?
