stumped - noise at full turn?

Post by torchard »

I've tried unsuccessfully to sort out some odd front-end noise occurring since I bought the van. Despite my efforts, it looks like I'll need to make a trip to Coombs and have Glen put it on the hoist. However I thought I'd throw it out to the group for your thoughts. It's a very noticeable ratcheting sound at full turn like a sheet of tin flicking in the spokes of a bike tire (click, click, click...). It's not the tires rubbing and I can't see any signs of wear to any of the components upon inspection. It typically occurs on the drivers side at full left hand lock turn, but occasionally emanates from the left side also, again at full or close to full locked turn.

I've pulled the wheels off and looked around. Spun the wheels while off the ground and in tight turn and all seems fine: The wheel spins freely, and the bearings appear appropriately torqued, and nothing rubs. I've made sure the wheel nuts are snug.

Interestingly the sound will cease for a while after the wheels have been removed and reinstalled.

At one point I thought it was the brake dust shields rubbing against the discs but don't know why that would happen.

I've wondered if the hubs are not fully disengaged - but they appear to snap in and out as designed.

I'm stumped.

sounds like a stuffed CV joint mate, check to see if the CV joint rubber boot is torn,if it is and it has only just started to click you may get away with flushing the joint out and re-packing it with grease and fitting a new boot,I did this with one of my older vans years back and it was still o'k when I sold it,........good luck.

Hmm, faulty cv joints never occurred to me, but would they click even when the front axles are NOT under power i.e. hubs not locked/transfercase not engaged?

The boot is intact, but I think you might be onto something, sadly. I spoke to Glen at CCA, and he hasn't had CV issues to date, but the plan is to investigate further.

Thanks,
