i recently got all my WVO settling out of plastic, bear prone tanks, in to steel home heating oil tanks. now i have been reading about the reaction of WVO with steel, leading to oxidation of the WVO. here is a great report describing oxidation.

wvo can oxidize in storage tanks,barrels and especially in fuel tanks, where heat from the returning WVO will rapidly increase the oxidation... if you drive infrequently, better to have a small tank.
i guess ill have to build a bear proof structure to store my WVO in plastic tanks. i drive enough that the fuel wont have much time to oxidize in my fuel tanks.
two of my 3 plastic 1000L totes already have holes in them from the bear...

"In short, vegetable oil breaks down through a process known as oxidative polymerization, oxygen attacks the double bonds of the triglyceride molecule and begins to break apart and twist the molecule until it can form long chain polymers with other molecules and it is these polymers that eventually link together forming a coating on particular metals and/or filter media. The formation of these polymers on the filter plugs it, the formation of polymers on steel interferes with tolerance critical parts in the injection pump and injectors can cause moving parts to seize or break and can accelerate the formation of rust on those parts."

Good article Ari, really goes to show that heat WVO tanks are quite unnecessary. As interesting how there recommendations are to loop the return, heck it's easier.
Wonder about the slight anti oxidizing affect of (pure) acetone I read about many moons ago?
