More fun with VINs and ICBC

Post by marsgal42 »

I dropped by my local ICBC agent this afternoon to adjust some issues with the insurance on my shiny new still utterly gorgeous (sorry... 8-) ) Delica, and got precisely nowhere because they couldn't figure out how to enter the Japanese P35W VIN in to ICBC's system. Having been registered only a week ago, Gumdrop does not need a BC VIN. ICBC's latest policy. This week, at least.

Before I make another trip, any words of advice? Any policies I can quote at them? Other than going back to the original agent who did the insurance and who appeared to know about imports?

The "adjustment", by the way, was setting up the 1st-year-after-import AirCare waiver so I can register Gumdrop as a genuine Greater Vancouver vehicle, not territory Z, which costs a fortune. The agent had no clue about that, either. Sigh. I think I see a pattern here.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi, the new process is actually easier than ever, you only need to show two matching vin numbers and you get your registration, the first is next to the drivers seat and the other is behind your calves if yoru driving in a little hident flap of carpet. what city are you from, that might help to be able to send you to a jdm friendly icbc office, some of them have actually said right to my face, " I dont think your vehicle should be on the road , and I wont help you do it" so now I take all my buisness to an office that actually is in buisness to do buisness and not to spit out attitude.
Noel

and if they actually dont know how to do it, then they are suposed to phone into icbc and they will walk the insurance agent through the process

Thanks.

The original ICBC fellow was in the same complex in New Westminster as Japanoid and seemed to know what he was doing. I'll go back to him some time during the week. It's only a 15 minute drive from my office, near Metrotown in Burnaby. The folks I visited today (who handle all my other insurance) really tried: they phoned ICBC, waited on hold for about 20 minutes, then were told the only available help for this particular issue was 9 to 5, Monday to Friday.

My Delica is registered, licensed, insured, and on the road. She's a delight to drive: so much so that I may need to fuel up tomorrow. 8-) I just need to adjust some of the paperwork, since I'm paying about 50% more for my insurance than I should be paying.
