ABS brake light- Motor not working in pump
I gave my the van a good washing today and now when I drive there is a warning light that stays on. Any fixes for this? Thanks
Edit: Reason explained further down. Some mild swearing envolved.

I had that symbol appear before and it just eventually disappeared. I think it could be a sensor that got wet. The symbol is for ABS. Squiggly line is vehicle skidding inside a pair of brake shoes.

Anything I can do about this light? Did it just get wet and need some time to dry out?
Edit: Sorry I was asking the question right when getting a response. So I guess I should just drive around a while and hopefully it will dry out?

Re: ABS braking light stays on now- any fixes?
Any other ideas for fixes? I drove it a bit yesterday and a couple hours today and the light stays on. Found an import shop that will do a scan check on the ABS for 50 bucks. Should I go for it or just keep on truckin? Just looking for advice because I am a bit scared to take it to shops around here as I keep thinking they will come up with more and more things to fix. They seem to never be happy with what you are willing to pay and just want to keep prodding you for more cash- personal opinion, of course.

Re: ABS braking light stays on now- any fixes?
My light stayed on for a long time (probably over a month) after Mardy and company adjusted the brakes. Then it just magically disappeared. I am not saying this is the right thing to do but since it is just an indicator light, I did not loose sleep about it being on. To me, as long as the ABS was working, it was good enough. Bonus that it disappeared. Question is will it come on when something is really wrong? I don't know but that remains to be seen.

Re: ABS braking light stays on now- any fixes?
I noticed today that the light stays on for a second or two when you start up to do the self check, then goes out. Then when I reverse out of a parking spot it is still off. Only when I put it in drive and start moving forward does it come on. Weird. Hey how do you know if your ABS is working? Is that the grinding, pulsating noise when you slam on the brakes on a slippery surface? I slammed on the brakes today to try to get that to happen and it just stopped really quick. No noise, grinding, pulsing feeling on the pedal.

You may some a faulty sensor or some air in your brake system in which case a simple brake bleed will suffice

Re: ABS braking light stays on now- any fixes?
Alright - answers finally. So I took it into a JDM shop here in Edmonton to diagnose and it is not coming up roses right now. The ABS pump assembly motor is not working. He said if I want ABS they can fix it but need to A) find parts B) fix it and it would cost about $1500!! Sh!t. Also had them look at a leak noticed by the shop doing my OOP inspection to determine how serious it was. From what they found it is the power steering rack leaking as well as one of the hose had a loose clamp. Clamp fixed, area cleaned. and will observe for a couple months to see how bad. Eventually needs to be replaced though which is another $1000 depending on the parts. Sh!t again. I am a little bit bummed out about all this right now. I think I need to talk to Mardy but he is away sourcing out new parts and stuff. That is a lot of chingo for a vehicle I just paid a lot of chingo for. So needless to say, I am having a bad day. To cheer myself up I will remind myself that they did find a loose heater hose which they reclamped and it is Friday. Only really helps for a few seconds.

Re: ABS brake light- Motor not working in pump
bad news...how hard is it to just remove the ABS (actually you probably have to do nothing more then remove power to system and light) and if you do replace parts in the future I would just remove the pump part.
I personally hate ABS, it seriously does not work in snow or loose roads and is way to complicated and expensive. Not to mention that in most studies it has been shown to not reduce accidents (personally proper driver training is the answer not complicated systems that do not work).
Rack should be rebuildable and a 1000.00 for the part seems $$$ last one I bought was $300.00.
Personally you could not pay me to fix ABS and do not get me started on airbags.....
cheers

Re: ABS brake light- Motor not working in pump
if you washed the truck and the light came on I would look at the electrical connections to the system...seems more logical it has a bad connection.

Re: ABS brake light- Motor not working in pump
I think they ruled out electrical. Here is the report:
Checked codes - code 53 ABS pump relay
Check power to relay - ok
check relay operation - ok
check voltage drop across relay - ok
power from relay to pump - ok
check grounds at pump assembly - ok
no pump operation, pump faultyu, requires replacement.
So that is that I guess. It took $300 to tell me I need to spend way more. I saw Rocky Mountain Imports have new power steering racks for $500. I am sad because this takes a little luster off "Lucky - the MAN-van". I new it was used though and I kind of expected some stuff to need tinkering, just not this kind of really expensive stuff.

We have a power steering rack kit at $250, original Mitsubishi.
