undercoating, rust proofing

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

undercoating, rust proofing

Post by westendah »

As a former resident of Montreal, I recall annual "rust check" treatments and undercoating paint being a part of daily driver vehicle ownership. What do you think about doing this on an imported L400 in good condition? Will an undercoat spray only create rust pockets in the underbody that I can't see which will rot over time? It's just that I've seen my share of older model Delicas with substantial surface and body rust, particularly those which have been driven back east (something I would like to do). So what's the word, undercoat? Rust-proof treatment? Is it worth the bother? Input appreciated as always!

I just got my L400 as well and I live in Alberta, where there is a lot of crap thrown on the roads during winter (and winter storms like today 8-) ). I am going to book mine in for a rust proofing called Krown Rust Control. Web link:

http://www.krown.com/#products/rust/

I have located a place that does it in Calgary (Airways) so I will be going there probably sometime in July. It is an annual thing - cost is about $130. I did a search on here and first found out about it then i researched it a bit. I prefer this to a hardened undercoating just for the reasons you said is that I think it will trap stuff in there and cause it to fester and get worse over time. Unless you can get the undercoating directly inside the factory that the vehicle is made in. Once it has been exposed I kind of think there is no going back. Just my 2 cents.

Do not use your regular undercoating paint on used cars as you just trap the rust and you won't see any problem spots until too late.

Wash the undercarriage very well, get a big bucket of http://www.fluid-film.com (or something similar) and spray it over everything including all voids. Repeat that procedure every few years and you are set.

huh,

I thought of that, but I still had mine undercoated. The undercariage was in such flawless condition that I figured it would be ok. I specified them to spray the fish plating by the front end
My 4runner was undercaoted over rust and most of the spray didnt hold.

BTW- I sold my 4runner, and bought pontiac montana :-( I swore I would never buy a minivan, now I own two. The montana is embarassing to drive, my wife claimed the deli.

wtf

Sell the montana and buy a deli from our stock.
But you may fly over to drive back this time. :-D

I am using Ziebart protection for my personal car, result has been satisfactory.

Hi Steven,

Trust me, I wanted another deli, but my budget was only 5000$ and I didnt get much for the Toy. Maybe some day.
I also used Zeibart, they did a good job, but the guys werent that cool. I always worry when I take my vehicle to new shops. When I had my land rover discovery(p.o.s.) I took it to "rainbow automotive" in Grand Prarie Alberta, and when I got it back, there were numerous rock chips in the windsheild, and a broken signal light. Wonder what they were doin?

Once rust appears do not cover it regardless of what any company claims.

Clean everywhere, get rid of the rust and either buy a gallon of wd/40, fluid film and a cheap sprayer or have it done by krown or a company that uses oil instead of their own 'coating'.

Once a coating is cured over rust/metal, you're doing more harm than good in the long run.

Yes, you are exactly right.
I used to buy Ziebart protection for my new cars only in my life so far. :-)

I also use Krown. It's just over $120 for a mini van here in Ontario. I have it done every fall on the Delica and also on the wife's toyota. Seems to work, but I guess I'll let you know in about 10-15 years :-D
