ugly but can't .. look .. away

Post by jessef »

Hide the children: Here's a Winnebago LeSharo camper body, installed on a Chevy AWD Astro van chassis! Only $9500!

Image

From the looks of it, someone spent quite a bit of time making this unlikely combination work. For more information:
http://www.rvtraderonline.com/listing/1 ... 4-98784150

A little background: After the oil embargo and gas crisis of the 1970s, RV maker Winnebago decided the time was right for a more fuel efficient camper. Winnebago contracted with Renault for a diesel powered FWD cab and chassis, and built a camper body for it. The result was called the LeSharo, and was sold for 10 years or so.

Problems with the Renault powertrain convinced Winnebago to switch in 1994 to a camper based on a VW platform called the Rialta.

Looks like something out of a '70s science fiction movie - a bad '70s science fiction movie, with no budget, and actors nobody recognises.

For $9,500 I think you're getting quite a lot out of that rig.

Maybe a different paint scheme would help it...

Cool! Orange with a bright white askew stripe! By the way, "Space 1999" was on TV in 1979 ~ so yeah, you're right!

A few stripes and you have a big bumble bee. 8-)

Dropping a diesel powerplant into that thing, some personal colouring on the shell and it could be quite the earthroamer for the cost.

True.

There is a Chevy van (fairly recent model) that's here in Langford with a 4x4 package added to it, and when I asked the driver he indicated the conversion shop could/would add diesel engines if desired by the customer. The vehicle didn't look too bad, actually.

Definitely should be painted 'Star Trek grey'.

Looks great, but compact motorhomes don't encourage long time interior comfort to the taller crowd. That with the lack of storage for extend trips, so it's cool but you know you'd still would take a Delica..............

Remember the Astro Van is really a truck chassis! Extremely heavy duty! The AWD system makes it even better! Of course, the towing capacity is awesome for a "van"!

Of course, the L300/L400 both have Trek shuttlecraft counterparts!
