s.ontario to the canadian rockies, 10 day roady

Post by delicioso! »

hey folks,
just thought i'd quickly post these, been busy since returning. plan was to drive out and camp/sleep in the van all the way to save some $$ (and attend a conference in banff). the old man had never really seen the country except southern ontario and the US so i thought this was a great opportunity to take him along... we went up ontario (taking almost 3 days to get out) before heading across west to alberta and seeing all the rain and flooding through the praries. i can't even remember the name of a few of the places we stayed but i'll do my best! soo....

Image

i met this fella who is walking/cycling from BC to newfoundland for wilderness protection.

turns out he also ran into that famous quebecer who's been walking AROUND THE WORLD for the past 12 years somewhere in alberta/saskatchewan on his final leg home.

i started pasting each pic and writing a short comment then found out there's a pic size limit. hope they come out okay!

thanks to the delica folks out in calgary for sharing some tips on places to see!

cheers.

Hi Romey, great photos. Where did you see the hoodoo type rock formations? Where did you photo the mists over water with driftwood logs? And the last photo of cleaning fluids, presume thats what you used to clean the interior (wow what a difference) what are your hints for using them? Cheers, Christine.

hi Christine! thanks! the hoodoos were in dinosaur prov. park in alberta and drumheller. dinosaur prov. park in absolutely ginormous! we were pleasantly surprised to find this huge almost crater like formation in the middle of flat farm vastness! inside are the hoodoos and millions of years of erosion exposing some fantastic fossils and dino bones and bone yards. drumheller is a nice touristy town that's pretty much riding the dinosaur theme bandwagon.

that area with the driftwood logs is somewhere along lake superior prov. park. my dad an I were the only ones on this hike, place was dead silent and pure. even walked the entire trail barefoot so i could feel the cool soft moss, lol.

check out my thread on gettins smoke smell out, it's what i used to clean/deodorize the interior, mostly non toxic environmentally friendly cleaners, working well so far (still a slight hint of cig smoke smell that we can live with).

anythin else, just ask away.
cheers.
thanks for lookin.

Looks like you guys had an amazing trip! Thanks for sharing the photos. Had to giggle at a couple of them... standing in the lake made me cold and the tracked bus that looks like it's in the area of the Columbia Icefields is impressive enough as a vehicle but the fact it has a "crystallite roof" makes it super cool!...

Was good to see some of the Badlands shots too... am thinking of adventuring out that way this weekend for a little photography session. Hoping to get to a couple of the ghost towns if I can. Do you recall where you stopped? Haven't been out that way yet.

Cheers!
Ian

hey Ian, glad you liked the pics! it was an amazing trip indeedy! wished we had waaay more time, but that's life. just head to dinosaur prov. park and set up camp, the actual area to explore is not that big (they saved a small area, about 5km hike around, just enough for tourists to get a feel for the place and trample on anything they want, the rest of the park is off limits and quite protected AND dangerous! one can fall into an erosion crack deep down and never be found!). drumheller is a touristy town, once you drive in, you'll see the hoodoos on the side and there are signs..was told that the ones i took pics off had been reinforced by cement so as not to speed up the erosion, etc... anyway, there's lots we ddin't see b/c of time but we got the idea of it...there are similar places in montana, like mini druhmhellers, but they don't come close to the vastness of dinosaur prov. park...but that compared to the grand canyon (never been) is another story, lol.

ddin't know this area got really hot and there are venomous snakes and scorpions/black widow spiders! cool! and cactus! neat.

man, that would be one sweet photo session if the sky was clear! do share some shots when you go.
cheers.
