L400 seat removal and camperized

Post by vanermi »

Just thought I'd post a photo blog of my camperize project. I wanted something that wasn't permanent that I could fairly easily dismantle for when I'm not traveling around in it. I got lots of great ideas from you guys posting your conversions and I thank you for the information because with it I was able to build an affordable project with the help of my brother in about two days. We used 3/8" plywood for the base floor and 5/8" for everything else. Everything is screwed together only except the drawers which were screwed and glued as there will be no need to dismantle them. The total cost of the project including all hardware, screws, glue and wood (3/8" ply, 5/8" ply and 3x2) was $237.00 Cdn.
If anyone has any questions, please feel free to post away. (Foam Mattress was additional $180)
Next project is installing Thule high rack with Shady Boy awning, then Mexico here I come!!

I really like your setup! Looks well thought out. Great to see how differently everyone works towards the same goal... 8-)

word of advice travelling south of the US border. staple/glue heavy carpet on your 'hidden' subfloor panel. I had a similar one albeit smaller in our XJ for laptops and our passport/cash. The 2nd check we went through, the police knocked on it, sounded hollow and they tore apart our truck thinking we were hiding drugs in the hidden compartments. Didn't make for a pleasant experience.

If you have wooden hidden/hollow areas, reinforce them with some soundproofing so they don't sound hollow when people knock on them.

Nice job on the rear config.

Van
Great pics
Do the bolts remove from the seat assembly without removing the entire seat first? I remove all the rear seats for camping 8 months of the year. Didn't know those parts could be separated, heavy suckers too!

Have you raised the back end to compensate for the extra weight. I'm thinking about air bags for the coil springs?

How do you like the chains? I broke one of mine the first day at Taurus Lake in 8" of rained on snow nov. deer hunting, caused me to cut short my hunting trip. Oh heck I said!!! Now I have a spare with my new set. Still good chains, think I hooked it on something in the wheel well.
take care
