Shifting Speeds

Post by Orionsbelt »

This subject has been sort of posted before but not quite.

I've made all the changes I think I could make to get this thing shifting better which it does. Various adjustments...

Almost no matter what it won't go into 4th (auto) until I'm at 65 kms (+-) - this is with the overdrive on.

So the shifting almost seems like it's speed based.

Is this what others area experiencing?

Thanks, Orion

I found the TPS adjust and 'kickdown' cable did all the adjustments needed to get the od speed down to 60-65 or so, but its really easier to lug the engine too much so I keep it up, especially with the larger rubber. I found it is more how you shift through the gears and more often than not you can control if it it holds 3rd or locks up to od with the pedal position when you set it right and get used to it.

It took a while to be honest.

Shift points are based on speed, rate of speed change, output power (torque), and tach reading.

If you mat the pedal, the shift point will be at the far end of each gear range. If you ease the speed upward, the shift point will be at the lower end of its range, primarily because that optimizes fuel economy.

Shifting into overdrive (and then the torque converter locking up shortly after that) at about 65 km/h is about right. If you want to stretch your power band a bit further, drive around town with overdrive off, and once you start hitting 75-80 on the highway, press the button.
