Yes Mardy. Have different opinions man. Already said that and said its OK for him to try different oil, not just read your comment and be scared of synth oil. See my post, you see this not attacking you, just alternate point of view based on experience and chemistry.

We need respect here for different opinions ok. Always rebutting other people when think different than you trying to. Maybe have passive-aggressive tendencies I don't know? I hope not. Not have trying be number one ok man. Its ok when people do not agree with you, don't need respond again with same info as before.

Exactly what I said in my first post...not sure why you like to argue and then say the same thing.
psilosin wrote:I get less vented oil when using synthetic oil than conventional in both my Surf and L400 so I would disagree with that blanket statement. Try different oils and see how they work for you, some your engine seems to like better than others.

hi, psilosin,
its ok no problem, i dont scared peopel saying about using synthetic.
hope you dont think same way. all i meant to say is thatusing synthetic is an option to those people
to upgrade from 15/40 to synthetic oil. and what will be the affect on your old engine.
as people dont have anymore more money when engine breakdown cause by oil.
either ordinary 15/40 or synthetic oil for this small diesel engine
cheer;s

All interesting stuff guys…nice to have sparked a debate!…people will always have different opinions for what’s best and there will never be a definitive answer.

Going for semi-synth is based on what seemed to be the consensus opinion from UK forums as best for L400 (not saying we know any better lol)

Going back to the original discussion point on this topic, from further research, it appears that it is pretty unlikely my oil seal will have been blown by crankcase pressure, without first having popped the dipstick out and gushing bucket-loads from the breather. So it probably was something else.

Also seems a bit of oil mist from the breather is pretty common, and is probably not anything to worry about unless it becomes more significant.

You need to check how much blow by you have....it is not a type of oil problem...this sounds like either too much "blow by" or a crankcase breather issue (not letting the pressure out).

Best option is a leak down test to see how much pressure is leaking out of the cylinders into the crankcase....(a compression test will also indicate a problem buy harder to pin point cause)...

Lots of reasons for lots of blow by from poor rings, cracked head, blown head gasket etc....

One issue you can also have is a "run away" diesel where high blow by can start pumping engine oil into the cylinders causing the engine to run on engine oil. You cannot stop the engine by cutting fuel since it is pumping its own fuel engine oil. No rev limiter and the motor is over revving as it runs out of engine oil! the only what to stop it is plug the air supply (wood block, CO2 fire extinguisher) or stall it if manual (not an option with an automatic)....

I believe this is in the first post of this thread, step one tried including details of the task............ also somewhat implied in title of thread "rocker gauze". That's ok, I've been busted for trying to throw in my 2 cents without properly reading the thread.......

I’ve since had it suggested to me that there is also a gauze in the main engine sump that could be blocked. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

There is a screen in the sump but you can't take it out, nor should you need to. If you are changing your oil every 5,000K then it shouldn't get blocked up. Another point to consider: If it did get blocked ~ you would know in short order to the tune of a rebuild or new engine.
