Gyro Horizon

Has anyone pulled apart their gyro horizon gauge off their dash? The reason I ask is mine leaks when climbing a steep incline and I want to know how easy it is disassemble and does anyone know what they are filled with? Is there possibly a little plug that is missing where it is filled and that's why it leaks? See how mine is only half full, it's even less now after an afternoon in the Rockies. Please share any ideas you have.

Super easy to remove/disassemble. Take the trim piece off at the very bottom (carefull, tabs break easy but it just pulls off). Remove the 2 phillips screws, remove pod and disconnect connector. Remove a bunch of screws from the back, set in deep. The thing will be in pieces now. You should be able to find a leak. I have no idea what is inside but if it was me, I would locate the leak, dunk the whole globe in a bucket of water untill it was full, goop it with some seal-all and let it dry, bobs your uncle. (Not really, I ripped mine out and made a pod for a boost gauge and a pyrometer to go there, might as well have something usefull.)

Thanks for the info, but I think I skip the filling it with water. I think sometime during the winter I will have global freezing, which will have a more sudden and adverse affect on my globe that global warming!

If anyone knows what these things are filled with please pass the info along.

I do like the idea of the boost gauge, but I like watching the globe bob around, when I get tired of watching the road.

don't know what they are filled with, however people have reported re-filling them successfully with baby oil.

the inclinometer is filled with glycerine ( i think baby oil works as well ) ??.

rather a different chemical, glycerine is quite stable. and should be available at most drug stores I believe

Hi Green1, We use Mineral Oil on ship's compasses. It is a very light weight oil, doesnt cloud at low temp. I can get you the exact spec easily if you want. Another member Falco --- in Vancouver just got a 3 piece dashboard gauge replacement for $17 , he'll probably see this email and reply also.
