Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Morning starts

Post by johnnyrigs »

I changed my glow plugs a couple of months ago to get better morning starts, it was chugging a little and smoked a bit and with the change, the problem was solved for a while. The past couple of days it seems the morning start issues have come back.:( Any suggestions?

If you have a hard starting despite of a lots of cranking,
1. glow plug issue ; it seems to be not the case as you replaced them already.
2. connection issue ; check all connection between battery to busbar
3. glow plug relay ; most likely this maybe the case.

Just because you changed your glow plugs a few months ago does not mean that glow plugs are not the problem...

Glow Plugs can fail for a few reasons (not saying this is the problem)...wrong ones, low quality versions, spray problems injectors, ECU problem (too long burns staying on), etc...

For me pulling them out is best to test however I also like direct jumping them with an amp meter on the jump wire to see how many amps they are pulling..

Next test power is getting to each of them, and duration is right amount of time....

Chugging could be indication of one glow plug not glowing (starting on less than 4 cylinders)....cold start it (crank it before you cycle the plugs does it start the same? that might indicate that plugs not getting power, wiring, relay, ecu, (L300 ecu seem to not like the wrong type of glow plug))...

good luck with it..

Bosch Makes glow plugs for the Delica (L300&L400) from the Bosch.au website:

There are different plugs for different applications. Bosch makes really good plugs for the VW 1.6-1.9 Diesels...I wish a dealer would try and stock Bosch Plugs for the L300-L400.

See page 28 of 88:
http://www.bosch.com.au/content/languag ... _Ready.pdf

I see 8 glow plugs for 4D56T and 4M40T (maybe not 1 plug fits all motors??)

EDIT:
If you then look up the part # the book list all the dimensions and volts and amps of the plugs

Check your relay before buying another set of plugs. Easy to check, and its its dead the relay can be quite easily rebuilt for $0.

Have there been problems with NGK for L400's? I know that they have the wrong resistance for the L300 6.2V application.
