Re: L400 Mudflaps
Cool Rudy! Great minds indeed! Had thought about trying to find a rubber distributor here in Calgary but I'm not largely familiar with the city and efforts to try to buy other things like cabinet plywood for other projects on a Sunday has been all but futile.mrdueck wrote:jaggedfish those look identical to mine! Great minds think alike eh? I woudn't spend any $ on the Jaos flaps as they won't last. I went to a rubber distributer here in town and got a sheet of 1/4 for around $35. I still have half the sheet left over which I plan to put accross the whole back when pulling our trailer. I re-used my brackets but if I didn't have them I would have done the same as jaggedfish. I have gone to the metal scrap yard many times to get aluminum for about 25% of the cost of Princess Auto. I have backed into many curbs already and the flaps just flex along. My only regret is that I didn't make them longer. Rudy
I would be cautious about making your flaps too long if you are installing the hold-back cables and are offroading at all. The flaps will flex wonderfully while going forward but the hardware can dig in to the ground like a shovel going backwards because of the tie-backs. I installed my rear flaps so the bottom is in line with the departure angle of the van to reduce the risk of this happening. Because my van is lifted, the flaps are still low enough to perform their function well. Pulling a trailer is a different thing as you would mostly be doing that on relatively tame roads. The ones the Jeep guys use are removable for when they go off road.
Visiting a metal scrap yard is a good idea! When I was doing some art projects, I bought scrap copper sheet from a roofing guy who used the money to fund his daughter's baseball team. Benefits all!
cheers!
Ian

Re: L400 Mudflaps
Ian, I'm not an off roader...just go through alot of snow in the winter here in the Peg. I hear what your saying about length but I'm curious if I could have gone through life with them longer. I could always trim them up. Non the less I'm happy with the mod. Keeps the whole van ALOT cleaner as I drove a couple weeks without and what a difference! I was going to post pic's once the weather warmed up but you took care of that. Thanks!

I am more interested in the metal bits on the bottom. I would like those and then I could just cut any random stock rubber to fit. No pretty kangaroo, but I think I can live with it.del400 wrote:now that i have a full set, was thinking of making a template and replicating them. Any interest?

Re: L400 Mudflaps
Well when you think about it... beavers and flaps kinda go together
it's a natural! Besides, beavers often play in the mud anyway. See if you can sell some to our Aussie brethren. It could be a new fad.

Anyone ever wear a Beaver Canoe sweatshirt in the late 80's early 90's? That is a prime example of a beaver fad. They where all the rage in my school.

Re: L400 Mudflaps
Touche. They were all the rage around here, along with Club Monaco sweatshirts, Zubaz pants, and rolling the bottom of your jeans. Man, my teenage years sucked. You little diapers should consider yourselves lucky.nxski wrote:I would have if I was alive!CREGAN wrote:Anyone ever wear a Beaver Canoe sweatshirt in the late 80's early 90's? Sorry to take this thread pretty far off topic- now back to beavers and flaps. Oh wait, I think I have to go to a different site for that.
