Thanks Profister for the links. Sorry to ask the question again as I am sure you are getting bored withi it. I used the search and read the posts - just wanted to find more current and relevant info relating to my specific case. I think what I will do is try to catch the morning startup on video this weekend so you all can see it. Appreciate thie info so far.

some smoke is normal for the first crank/two to three seconds
if you have a lot of smoke (a lot is relative to each person) A lot to me would be a cloud the size of the van that hovers.

if you are indoors/garage/underground parking or the exhaust is right beside/in front of a wall, then you'll always see and smell the smoke more than if you're outdoors and it's breezy
