We are talking about 1st generation L400, no need to mention 2nd generation. :-)

I saw part number for LWB, it is MB160949 as well. :o
The mitsubishi part number does not cross over in the NA dealerships. That is why the MB'xxxxx part numbers don't mean anything here. You can have an identical bearing part in a Mitsubishi Montero (north american version) and in a L300 Delica (Japanese version) but have two different MB* part numbers. Mitsubishi's way of making more money out of one part.Very common across all manufacturer's.

L400's have two different rear differentials. One is an 8" (R&P ring and pinion) size (which is the same as the L300/pre-89 NA Montero 4cyl) and one is a 9" (R&P ring and pinion) size which is the most common on LWB, Royal Exceed's and was a factory option available as a custom order on the L400 SWB Jasper, Chamonix and Super Exceed models.

Series 2 is in there because they are already lined up for importing as of October this year. People will be curious to know and this thread will pop up.

My point at the beginning is that you can buy the SKF, Timken, National brand here in Canada/USA under the application 1987-1989 Mitsubishi Montero 4cyl.

That is what the original poster was asking. L400 stuff just came into off topic.

Original poster is asking for sourcing part ( L300 ).
I answered we tried it from Lordco as it was in vain, but we have that part from Japan.
I know L300 and L400 has exact same number for this part, and we are bring them here for repair.

Just let us know if they are same or different.
***Rear differential Drive Pinion oil seal ; MB160949*** for both model

I tried to source it locally for the last 5 month, but not successful.
I was very excited you sourced already locally as I have a customer who wants me to replace it asap, so asked you get it and post pics with receipt.

It would be great if you can do that for the forum members. 8-)

The 8" smallest R&P differential is the same in the 2.5TD Delica L300 (all models) and the 2.8TD Spacegear L400 (SWB's except those mentioned above) meaning the carrier bearings, ring gear, pinion, seal/crush/sleeve are all interchangeable.

I changed out the carrier bearings in Turtle (L300) and in our first L400 (SWB) and they are identical. The difference comes when you go out to the hubs and the axle tubes.

when the shops open tomorrow I'll see who has stock in Canada/US. Being a service shop, you'll be able to buy but a one off walk-in customer will not as the places I use to source are distributors, not retailers.

Will post the info in the morning.

Thanks.
I look forward to hearing you for good news. :-)

One more question, in your post " Series 2 is in there because they are already lined up for importing as of October this year ".
I may have wrong info, but is it true?
Even if google says like that, but aren't we able to import 2nd gene around Summer next year???

manufacture date is usually different than registration date the first time the vehicle is registered in the said country.

Example. I have a 1996 L400 Chamnonix.

Although it's a 1996 model, it was eligible for import in October 24, 2010 because the production date was October 24, 1995. The registration date was February 12, 1996.

Next year 2012 model vehicles are manufactured before the vehicle year beforehand in 2011. That's how you can buy a 2012 Ford truck in November 2011.

The manufacture date, along with an official manufacture letter of declaration from Mitsubishi with the date stamp is the document one needs to prove to customs what is the manufacture date. For a visual, the driver's side seatbelt will have that date stamp as it is rolled off the production line although that's not enough for customs. They need that official Mitsu letter.

Because this import process (difference between end of manufacture date/initial registration date) has been done by north american dealerships/association for decades, the option is available to any importer.

You just need an official manufacture letter. When I enquired about it for the first time, customs officer showed me forged manufacture letters so they obviously can tell the difference between an official and a made up one. Assuming people tried to bring in newer vehicles this way and failed.

Series II L400 production began late October 1996.

Origin registration for the first time of a vehicle's life in Japan (if it is domestic manufacture like Mitsubishi - Japan) is usually 6+ months after the origin production date where it rolled off the production line.

Learned this from a family friend who has worked with Toyota in Japan since the early 80's.

very informative. :M

BTW, do you think it will be possible to get an official manufacture letter from Mitsubishi before the deadline for custom clearance from the date of purchase in real world?
We don't want to take risk somehow. 8-)
It will take only 2 months for our stock delicas to arrive here....

not sure. it's been almost 2 years since I brought in ours that way.

you'll have to contact Mitsubishi directly in Japan. Speaking/writing Japanese is a must. It took me 5 months to get my letter in the mail from the day I called/faxed them.

that's the output shaft seal on the transfer case (rear facing), not the rear differential

SKF # 15800

Husband went to Lodco and they did not have the SKF17667 in their entire system. Napa appears to not have either. though they did say that, yes that was the correct part number. They recommended going to a bearing shop. Another part they said would work was National 224570 .
I guess I'll try and call around to bearing shops in Vancouver. Apparently there is one in PoCo Raeside Bearings and Seals that should have it.
