Went back to see Gary a few days later and he was very accommodating; welded up the gap between hanger and new muffler to make it as solid as stock. No charge. His opinion was that it wouldn't make much, if any difference because the more open exhaust/freer revs will inherently produce minor changes in engine's character. Welding did seem to help and I'm quite happy with the overall result.
