There is another aspect to this, bandwidth costs money. I have nothing to do with running this site, but I do others, and I make it so large images must be hosted offsite, because my site is free to use, and I dont see why I personally should front the cost of both the extra space and bandwidth for it.
There is no free lunch, on the internet or otherwise, and if a site owner decides a policy, thats their choice, to me, 900 odd pixels isnt that big in the world of 16:9 screens, but, who cares, if you really want to post a big pic, link to an offsite image, its no harder than inserting an image and if people want to look they can.
