I don't know what the going rate is for that job, but after having done that, it's a lot of work and that sounds quite reasonable. Just make sure that the price includes: two timing belts, two idlers, 4 oil seals (cam, crank and two "silent shaft" seals), water pump, and valve cover gasket. At that mileage, if they haven't been done I'd also replace the rad hoses while he's in there.

Included in the cost is
timing belt kit (timing belt, balance belt, tensioners)
cam seal
crank seal
upper balance seal
injection front seal
half moon seal
valve cover gasket

6.6 hours labour

While you're in there you really want to do the water pump. That's pretty standard when doing timing belts. You could just leave it, but it's almost the same labour costs as belt replacement to replace the thing if it starts leaking over the next 100K

Hey, while we're on this topic, I'm just in the process of doing all this myself due to my injector pump leaking. We figured on doing all timing belt and related stuff, water pump ect at the same time.

Got all the parts from Rising Sun including a rebuild of my injector pump.

My mechanic is wondering if its really necessary to do the silencer belt as it looks like a bunch more work.....

This job is really turning out to be expensive. Any thoughts??

The silencer belt isn't required, but the old one has to come out before it breaks. It's a funny comment though about cost as it shouldn't add much to the job. I don't know rising sun prices but I was able to get the belt and tensioner for around $60.00. Install was a snap, maybe 20 min.

Call Mardy at Amazing Auto Imports...he's at least honest, and competitive on price and won't rape you like certain other "claimed" experts ..but be warned, he's not the quickest, just the best.

Sorry I'm confused. Do you mean the old silencer belt needs to come off before it breaks?? The kit I got from Rising Sun came with everything mentioned earlier.

And I know what your saying about the job. It's all right there. The mechanic is a very good friend. Has worked at local VW Dealer for 40 years. Lots of diesel work but nothing with a Mitsubishi. He's been reading the manual at home to try and get a better understanding on the rig.

The VW shop rate is $100 an hour all day long. He's asking me how far I want to go with this repair. I'm saying all the way right now I guess.. But at the end of the day with parts, rebuild of injector pump, and labour it's going to be expensive. I'm guessing over $2000 for everything.

She's a sad day for me and my bank account:(

Cut off the old silencer belt if you're not going to replace it. It will eventually break and tangle with the other belt and *boom* kiss your engine goodbye.
Wilson and Proctor would probably rebuild your injection pump for under $700.00

Ok so here's the update. My mechanic did replace the silencer belt while working on the engine. He did a bunch of stuff, water pump ect.

I had my injector pump rebuilt at Rising Sun for $700. Since I'm in Ontario it's a bit of a hassle with the parts and this rebuild but I think Rising Sun has taken care of me well, including the guy I bought my Deli from here in Ontario:) I certainly didn't buy this van thinking everything would be easy & straight forward.

Anyway, my mechanic finished the job at days end today. He's gonna drive it tomorrow and make sure everything checks out. And I'm good to go for the weekend and hopefully a lot longer....

Well if I can hijack my thread back, I am getting the water pump done now too, as per your suggestions.

In opening up the timing belt area, it was found that the injection front seal was leaking diesel, so that will need replacing now too... we're up to a $1700 quote now I hope this is it and my van will be in good shape for a while now... otherwise i'll have to move out and take up permanent residence in the Deli... which, when I think about it, isn't that bad a thing... might get a bit chaotic with 2 cats and a pregnant wife though...
