Most manuals 5th was added to the tailshaft to a 4 speed....always a little weak..

Behind the 4D56 it is an OK transmission (I agree with Felix a must for world travel)..

It flexes to much so you can get a tougher oil pan for it....

I drive mine nicely...no issues....if I was in Arizona it would be a manual since way less heat developed for the cooling system to try deal with...

Here's one from the cockpit of the Fraser Canyon just north of Lillooet, BC.

Hope you find the bus you want. Quality always trumps colour and bells and whistles. Good luck - best vehicle ever!

I too love the glass roof (just a little to wet where I live for the glass roof)
I like the look of the newer ones enough that I just drive with my fog lights. In fact, my headlights haven't worked in a year, but I plan to put in LED bulbs soon.

Here are a pile of pictures I've taken of mine...

Look good but does not work??? Never will understand form over function...

I will take the brightest stock* headlights over good looks on any dark road....

*stockish as I do have Hella headlights but stock bulbs

Like Thedjjack I'm a fan of the 'squares', brighter options and in the middle of a trip a rock in the headlight means you just pop into the first store available to get a replacement. Not the case with the mid 90's plus. Also 88 and 89 have the much more camp-able sliders in the rear.

As I had both in my driveway for a few years; you can put the headlights and front grille of a 90's+ into/onto a 88 or 89 P35 Delica. Had always planned to hit Coombs Country Auto and turn my 91 into a square!

Thanks, guys. This is good stuff.

I'm driving an 89 Pajero right now, which has aftermarket 7" round headlights. They cast a pair of Star Trek logos ahead of me. Not the best, certainly not as good as the RHD lights I had on my 92 GVR4, which were fail compared to the USDM units. I've had a couple years of lame lighting. Figured I'd have to do something about the RHD lights anyway, and projectors might be easier to swap.

An automatic gearbox wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Guess I could fit a cooler, right? Just seems a complicated piece of kit compared to the manual. Who tries towing in 5th gear with a 2.5L van? Considering my current 2.6L Pajero needs to be floored in 3rd just to maintain 45mph up mountain grades, I don't think I'd really be worried. Still, it's good food for thought.

And don't get me thinking about how I could get a 1989 right now. I'm not prepared, and have a DSM to buy between now and then! So much inspiration in this thread. Thanks!
