Cracked Head Issues....

Post by JoeMag »

I did about 6 cyl head jobs in the last 6 months on either L300 and L400 and only 2 of the 6 were cracked. And most of them had way more than 200000km on the clock! My L300 has 215000km and the head is still good so far (knocking on wood here :? ) But I noticed that the head gasket or head itself tends to go quicker on engines mated to automatic transmission. Maybe its just a coincidence and I'll have to look into it.

Cracked Head Issues....

The MLB has an A/T and nearly 232,000 on the clock. So far so good (knock on wood).

I make it a point not to try and burn rubber when proceeding from a stopped position; I also warm my engine up when the wagon has sat idle for an extended period of time, such as first start of the morning or after work when the wagon has been sitting over eight hours. It takes all of four minutes before the water temperature needle begins to move, which means the thermostat has opened, which means that the engine is operating at ambient temperature and all the bolts and nuts are at the temperature that they are torqued for.

If you have an habit of running down to the car in the morning and turning it on and speeding away before the engine has warmed up, then all the nuts and bolts are under pressure but the engine is cold and not expanded to the temperature they are torqued for. Now it's rattling loosely. In my humble opinion, I think this is where heads get compromised.

Perhaps I am wrong about this, I am after all a painter and not a mechanic, it just seems to be logical to me.
