Glow Plugs Cycling on and off after engine start fixed with Temp Sensor

SK66 is right:
If you have the 6v super quick system then cycling of the glow plugs *IS* normal until the engine comes up to reasonable temp. Basically, the first 2 clicks are the system applying 12v to the 6v plugs so that they glow "super quick." then it switches over to 6v as needed (the additional clicking).
Now what I was saying is if your ear numerous clickings when driving and well after the engine is warm (for exemple after 30minutes draiving) then it may not be OK.

In any case, and because it is not expensive, first change that "Temperature Sensor". Ideally, use OEM parts as much as you can. If it do not work, you can have the ECU (Electronic Computer Unit) capacitors changed: any electronic guy can do that for you, here at less than $100CAN. Testing the OEM Glow Plugs might be helpfull too as well as cleaning all electric contacts with dedicated spray stuff. Keep in touch after you went through these steps 8-)

NOTE (Joke): Is you want to get rid of this Baby, send it overhere, we will find a way to repair it :o

Thanks Lapprentis,

After a bit more research, I noted that I have the "Super 6" system. After reading your post, I am now confident that it is running properly (thanks for the Christmas Gift). The Glow Plugs usually stop actuating after about 3 minutes. My Deli is only a couple of weeks new to me. It's mostly original (from what I can see), and has about 62,000 km on it. Would you still recommend changing the Temp Sensor (and other stuff) for preventative maintenance?

NOTE (Joke Rebuttal): Hah! No, way! I had a Deli before, but I had to sell it. I couldn't stop think about the good times I had. So, when I had a chance to get another one, I decided to make the Deli my forever car. Now, have to learn the car inside out. Again, thank you (and everyone else) for the help. :-D

I was having a similar issue with my van a month ago ('91 L300).
In the middle of one day I noticed that I was getting "No click" at all. But with a warm diesel engine she still fired up. The next day with a cold eng. block, nothing!

So I read through all the threads about the possibilities. I used the "direct" jump to the GP bus bar to get her started. Then I went through the usual suspects. I have the Quick Glow system so I started with some new/used relays. Nope! Fresh GP's - I stuck with the OEM's. Nope again! So what could be the culprit? I noticed in all the threads I read that no one seems to have issue with or mention the GP control resistor. Do these never fail? And most seem to prefer to bypass the entire system but putting in a manual switch. (For me this will be the last option I would use)

But having serious electrical inabilities I decided to send my ECU to Daniel in Victoria (which I read about here) to check/repair it...
http://www.w1ngselectronics.com/index.p ... glow-timer

He was easy to deal with and quick. His diagnosis was that it had all the typical signs of failure (See quote below). No I haven't put it back in to confirm as it will be here tomorrow. But I'm confident it was the culprit. (I will report more on this after install).

I should have heeded my brothers words from long ago: "When you have a problem start with the basics - then work your way forward from there."

Of the things I did (so far) getting the ECU fixed would have been the least expensive.

On a side note: My mechanic always reminds to run some sort of diesel fuel conditioner as the fuel filter can get ugly and wreak havoc. I personally run Amsoil, I'm at about 210,000km and never have had fuel related issues.

"Yes the usual issues had occurred: leaking electrolytic capacitors and corrosion of the traces beneath as the electrolyte mixes with the conformal coating on the board an creates a corrosive solution. The affected areas are scraped clean and all damaged trace area replaced with wire and re-soldered along with the installation of new high quality capacitors. The unit is fully tested and fully operational."

Got my ECU back from Daniel today (Thank you New Years for making we wait longer than I wanted). Plugged her in and she works a treat now.
