There are a number of steps that are cheaper and easier than swapping the turbo. Like 204 explorer mentioned, open up the exhaust. The k&n is allowing more air in, you need to let more exhaust out. I noticed a huge difference in acceleration and power with the k&n and a straight pipe. Intercoolers are immediate bolt on horsepower which is why so many manufacturers make diesels with them. Colder air is denser, or has more oxygen per volume, so there is more oxygen to mix with fuel to burn equalling more power. Taller tires will lower engine rpm at a given speed but off road tires will increase your rolling existence or suck power. I went from 195s to 235 highway tires and dropped my cruising rpms from 3500 to 3000. There is also an IP pump/turbo mod by a French fellow, the gallium mod, that should give you 10 to 15 horsepower immediately. So you have options! Let us know what you try and how it goes. I think the others have covered about everything. The stock turbo is fine up to 14psi without overheating the intake air (as long as you don't go over 3500rpm at full boost too often), so I'd adjust that rather than buying a whole new turbo at this stage.

If you find you need more than 14psi you're going to need a new turbo, but also an intercooler- our engines are quite primitive and it's easy to over-advance the ignition point if the intake charge is too hot.

A less restrictive exhaust makes a huge difference to how fast the turbo spools up. Definitely recommended.

I have opened up the exhaust to a certain extent. I have the stock dump pipe (what I call a downpipe coming from the car tuning world rather than turbo diesel world) which runs into a 2.5in dual tip side exhaust, so a "cat back" exhaust I would say. I think that bottle necks though from 1.75in-2.5 Either way, is anyone doing a straight 2.5in from the turbo back? That would be easier than the turbo upgrade which sounds like is more a last resort.

Ralph, the gallium mod sounds like a test project the government might have done, ill have to look into it on the forums as a quick google shows nothing related to a deli.

The dump pipe (cast iron bit between the turbo outlet and the flange with spring bolts) is plenty big enough for a TD04. Very little to be gained by swapping it out. The exhaust after the flange though...

A 2.25" will fit between the springs easily, a 2.5" might need some modification.

The "Galium modification" was a simple way of tuning the injection pump to provide more fuel than stock. (http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.ph ... it=exhaust)

The original page has disappeared though :-(. Basically you take off the boost compensator cap and diaphragm, remove the nylon ring that stops it moving too far, and wind the star wheel up(anticlockwise) half a turn. The keywords you want to Google are "bosch VE boost pin adjust".
