Snow Creek is at the top end of Sproat Lake on the other (not highway) side of the lake. If you're into major back roading, you get to it by Stirling Arm road (just outside Port Alberni, then on Taylor Arm Road. The other way of getting there (if the road is cleared - waiting to get that info) by staying on Hwy 4 about 45 km past Port, then left just past the rest stop, and double back about 10 km. I haven't been in the Stirling Arm road way, so I don't know what the road is like or how far it is.

Been in the other way and it was a bit rough, but not too bad if you take it slow. Apparently they've been doing some work on the road, so it may be better now, been a few years since we've been there. We went in with pickup and towing the boat, and made it just fine.

We'll be going up on Thursday or Friday and going home on Monday.

No issues with a dog as long as he/she/they are as "perfect and wonderful" as our 2 four legged kids.

My son and I can confirm we will be getting away from Wednesday, the 14th, to Sat morning.

Plenty of time to decide which campsite to grab.

Cheers,
Kev

Updated information from the Tourism guy re: access

how many feet of snow?

Can you tell me approx. how many km from Port Alberni on the Stirling Arm route to snow Creek?

Also, how far from Port Alberni on Hwy 4 to the turnoff by the rest area, and then how far back on the Taylor Main to Snow Creek site?

Response:

That was 2 feet of snow, sorry. Likely less this week, but I have no accurate information. The Stirling Arm route is about 30 km, Sorry, I don't have a hard number. The turnoff Highway 4 at the rest stop is probably about 40 km from Port Alberni and the Taylor Main section back to Snow Creek is 9 km

Snow creek looks like a pretty good spot, I'd be into taking either route there. The worse the road the better :) I really liked what I saw of the backroads off #4 in that area when I was up there in January.

If you guys end up camping there may long probably me & the girlfriend will stop in and camp one night then continue on to tofino, as she has never been there.

The main back road around the lake is actually on google maps, so you can map a route right up to the little road to the campsite...

good info as far as distances go, but kind of funny for timing....the short route (which is actually more kms.) says 9.1 km or 8 minutes on the logging road, which would be fine, but you'd rattle the teeth right out of your head if you tried it. I guess they are assuming it's a paved road, which would make the timing close. The long route (31 km on logging road) you're supposed to be able to do in 26 minutes --- I DON'T THINK SO!!

anyhow, thanks for the maps, I will make sure to keep on in the glove box for the distance markers. Big help!

A quick "safety" note -- when you are coming from Port Alberni and turning off Highway 4 onto Mission Road ("short route") you are crossing the highway, and people may be coming up behind you doing way over the speed limit! (A friend had a potentially bad accident doing this a few years ago). If anyone is following you, pull over to the right and then make your turn when it's safe. Let's not start the weekend and the summer with a disaster!

Allright, crushing time for decision as I'd want to reserve the ferry ride. (hate to pay extra but even worst to have to wait forever and it's a long weekend...)

Have we agreed for sure on the campsite? My wife is funny, her only concern: Is there toilets? (go figure!). Anyone has an answer? (If no toilets I'm going solo with my dog, not really a bad thing I guess) 8-) And if there's some "modernities" then my wife and 14 months old boy would join me for a bumpy ride...

Kevin, are you still planning on going early? If you do I might be able to join you somewhere on the way as I have some time off I could use.

Coaxial, still interested? When are you planning on leaving the city?

Let me know guys so that I can start planning a little...

Cheers,

Okay, I get the whole "are there toilets" thing, because we've certainly been to lots of places where there aren't, but, yes, there are pit toilets but they are new, as the camp was just re-constructed last year, so they should be in pretty good condition. For ultimate comfort, tell her to bring her own tp because the stuff they supply is usually pretty much Walmart special low low price stuff.

(J.Paul)mararmeisto - haven't heard anything from you -- are you going? What about Noel - should we let him come along even if he isn't driving a deli??

That's a little further afield than we were hoping to go. Still in the planning stages though, so we may have a second pass at the buoy before we decide...

Noel's ride may not be a Delica, but it's quite the set-up! Looks like he's put a lot of time/effort/money into that beast.
