Where the driver's side front bar (the bar with the shackle) is mounted on the frame it's only using 1 bolt but the frame at this location already has tapped holes for 3 more bolts. Could one fabricate a single arm with a mounting plate using either the 3 remaining available tapped holes (or managing to use all 4) to support the winch? Would it be strong enough?

The passenger's side front bar is using the only one of the two available mounting holes and the space is at a premium on that side (well, both side it's at a premium...). Like most others, just trying to find the best way to mount a winch...

While that is true, it's also potentially misleading, the question isn't wether it can pull and empty winch line, it is wether the same pump is strong enough to pull the whole vehicle out of the muck, or if that's just too much for the little thing.

And no, I don't have an answer to that question, but it is something I've wondered about ever since you first mentioned using that pump. Please let us know how it goes, because if it works well I might be interested, the hydraulic winches are far superior, the question is simply wether that pump can support such a beast.

I'll need to get the power steering pump specs. Anyone have them by any chance ?

It would be easier if you dident even look at those mounting spots, take a 14 mill socket, Remove the two bottom bolts, then reach inside of your plastic guard, you will feel two bolts on each side, Remove those, then your whole front bull bars will come off, then you will see the two steel sections that are attached to the frame , THAT is what you should mount your winch to. Keep it nice, simple and strong with out complicating things. when we mounted a winch on a customers van this is what we did, the plastic center section is cut to fit around the winch... you could always buy a winch, have us mount it and then you will fully realise how it goes......Yes Im cheeky, but Im typing so I'm allowed lol

And I've winched mine out of a snowbank-ditch using the bullbars, so they aren't that flimsy, but I attached close to a mount point.

proper point to attach a line is on the lower arms in such a way that they can "slide" upwards to almost the mounting points shown in your picture (according to mitsubishi, and it makes sense, that puts it between the attachment points, and closest to the stronger of the 2)
As for a winch, I would mount it in such a way as to have most of the force transfered to those attachment points.

I do enjoy your humour... but quick question here. Is there a big difference between the Talbor series and the 8274 model. They don't look the same at all but I've heard many times about the 8274, so just curious if you have knowledge on this?

Huge difference.

Some of the Tabor motors are made in Brazil and have bronze bushings instead of ball bearings so I'd check the motors in them whether or not they are the dual Bosch or four Sako field motors.

I think they are good value for the buck for the rare occasion for self-recovery or pulling out someone.

You cannot go wrong with an 8274 on a Delica, that's for sure. It's a proven workhorse of a winch.

If I was replacing a 8274 with one of the Tabor's, it would be the 12k model.

But more likely, I would find an 8274 in good shape or an old one and rebuild it.

Personal preference. Most people I know would rather buy new with a good warranty from the dealer as opposed to buying a used winch. Because really, if you don't know the winch history, you could well end up with a really rough one.

yup they are tottaly different, but most people have a hard enough time spending the money for the tabor series of warn winch, if you want another version, let me know and I can get a price on that. I believe if you go to www.warn.com you can do all the research and pick what would suit you best, the tabor is an entry level winch and will get your out of just about anyting you could get your self into, not taking into account for the skinny pedal and BFFI. some people will do just about anything. but if your need to hang your truck from a cliff and have it dangle then for sure go with the more expensive ones. I personally put the 12000 on my Landcruiser, ALOT more than it needs, but its a heavy truck and ive sunk my vehicles in door handle deep mud befor and it tends to be like GLUE to get out of.
but in the end its up to you , a 9000lb tabor would be more than enough for a delica.

BTW it is funny how they use short names 'a brick' for L300 and 'a bun' for L400.

Just another quick point on this subject, if you're worried about weight on the front end, synthetic rope cuts a lot of weight off the winch, and is a lot safer/easier to use at the same time. When my winch goes on the next Pajero, it will have 100 feet of amsteel blue on it - winding in wire rope (esp when it starts to get nicks and burrs) is not the funnest part of wheeling...
