So it has been 3.5 years since the original post.
Did we get any good mechanics whom we can trust with our Delicas/Pajeros?

Kirkham Automotive (near Heritage LRT) does great work. That's who I use. They are used to Delicas. Only problem is they don't have a diesel mechanic, so can't get deep into the engine. But timing belts and such they can handle.

I wouldn't trust GCL, I've heard nothing but bad things about them. Stevos stopped sending their fuel pumps to them a few years ago, instead sending them to BC for work.

I would go to Kirkham, but I've had some trouble with them too. They are honest and hard working guys, but they charge straight time on the delica. That meant when they had to replace my starter there was 4 or 5 hours of labour attached because the guy working on it hadn't done one before and it ended up costing $1000.

When my fog light wires got tangled in my belts and caused some damage, they also totally missed the now loose crankshaft pulley. Thankfully Butch noticed it when we took the Delica in to Van for a tune up on vacation or we could have lost her if it broke.

We've found a pretty reliable place in Okotoks at the Hilltop shell (I think its under a tire shop name officially, but its more or less an independant shop). Shane and his guys have been great, quick and as long as we find the parts, will work on anything!

foxycanuck: what is that shop in Van that you took your Delica for a tune up?

I use Kirkham also and have always had a good experience with them. They have done work on two Delicas for me including inspections, minor mechanical work, and lifts. I also take my wife's car to them and they found a problem that others couldn't. These guys are friendly and I feel they are honest.

The owner has even offered up his specialized BBQ trailer for Delica club gatherings. Haven't taken him up on it yet.

The thing with Delicas in Canada is unless a mechanic is totally familiar with these buses like some in BC there will be extra expense to a certain degree for mechanical work to be done for the first time. It's the nature of the beast. If I can do it myself I will but if I don't know what I'm doing I have to suck it up and pay someone to do it or else it doesn't get done. I'd sooner pay a little more and be confident it's done right and then consider that an investment in confidence for myself and future Delica owners to get the same work done in the future. Time is money as they say...

So, it's now the end of 2014, have we seen any more improvements in availability of good Delica mechanics in YYC?

I just got my l400 last week, and one week in love it. More than I even thought I would.

I'm still happy with Kirkham. I just had them upgrade my L300 front brakes from single piston to dual piston calipers by using the 92 Montero brakes. It was more complicated than the posts on various forums would lead you to believe (you have to replace brake hoses with longer ones), so it took longer than expected. But they treated me fairly.

On the Pro-Active front, I took my Delica there a few months ago for some engine work (Kirkham doesn't have a diesel or turbo mechanic), and they fixed my problems.

So right now, both are on my "recommended" list.
