:? I don't know, I mean I love my bus, really I do, but have to ask what it is better than? Reusing an old vehicle is good, and converting to burn wvo is even better, but don't kid yourself - it's an environmental nightmare :o Oh well... :?
First, being diesel, it is better than comparable sized gas engine in three out of five pollutant categories. It is tied (over the life of the vehicle) in one category, and worse in one (but not the one that contributes to ozone depletion). So just the fact that it is diesel means it is better for the environment than a similar gas van.

Second, if you do SVO or WVO (we're not there yet, but it's in the plans for a future mod) you are more or less carbon neutral, because the carbon you cause in burning the fuel is offset by the growing of the fuel, and if it's WVO then it a double plus.

Like Green1 said, if you're comparing the deli to a bike or a kei car, then yes - environmental nightmare (in comparison). But we have five kids. We have to have a seven seater, and the delica is one of the best options out there for the environment. We actually considered simply selling our minivan and going transit and car co-op, but after researching it proved to be way too expensive for seven of us to do that.

At least that's my understanding, but I'm sure many know better than I! :M

I seem to be riding my bike less than I should these days- the Deli's too fun to drive!

I bought he Deli because of lust for them started back in 1996.
I travel to Japan 2x per year on business. My first trip was in 1996 and I was amazed by all the great vehicles in Japan that were not on our shores (at that time) and the deli stood out in my mind. I thought it was the perfect family van and would suit the demands of the Canadian consumer well. I was camping on Gambier island when I saw a RHD/JDM Pajero lifted, bars, 33", the works - that got me researching and I was pleasantly surprised to see the Deli's that I loved so much already coming here. Within a week I had one in my driveway (and then struggled for months to sell my car....impulsive I know but no regrets).

I can't see myself driving anything else for quite a while......

What a shiny underbelly. This ad reminds me of that thread about making a movie on the habits of Delicas in their natural environment... (ya, I know you remember the one, Eloquent Mararmeisto!)

No video response this time, but an explanation:
  • -we wanted better fuel economy than our Windstar (which was a pig!)
    -Delicas are neat 8-)
-we needed to be able to carry 6 passengers (two adults and four children)
    -Delicas are different 8-)
-we wanted something that would be able to tow (most NA vehicles require a towing package)
    -Delicas are unusual 8-)
-we wanted something we could afford (10k$ vice 30k-50k$)
    -Delicas look cool 8-)
-we wanted a diesel for the better fuel economy
-and did I mention that Delicas are cool? 8-)
