I like the 'jumpy' bit at the end of the circuit in that last video.

Isn't that crash test video the D5? Is that badged as the Outlander over here on this continent?

Not quite. The D:5 and Outlander share a platform, the engine, driveline, suspension, pan, but not the rest of the bodywork or interior.

I became suspicious when I saw ads for both, and saw that they had exactly the same 2WD/4WD/LOCK control on the dash. You can see this in the Happy Japanese Family D:5 ad, and the Off-road Rally in the City Outlander ad.

Yup. Same vehicle. Same engine/chassis/etc. as a D:5, but a different body.

That's interesting Laura - I used to drive an Outlander for work all the time in Aus, and quite enjoyed it. The CVT gearbox was an interesting thing, but it's quite fun putting the boot in, watching the revs climb to 6000 and stay there while the truck gets quicker and quicker.

I can see how the platform would lend itself to being a van, and from the minor 4x4 I did in the Outlander, it seemed fairly capable for it's size.

The Mitsubishi CVT specs make for interesting reading. The transmission ratios range from 2.94 to 0.39:1, so they match it up with a 6.5:1 final drive ratio. It's a variable conical pulley transmission, like a giant snowmobile transmission. Many manufacturers are trying to get away from the engine-screaming-and-accelerating-on-the-transmission effect, with varying degrees of success.

A colleague of mine drives a Prius, which also has a CVT, though it works on completely different principles.

Would you want a Delica with a CVT? A former colleague sneered at any vehicle with an automatic transmission, but I find that I just don't care anymore, put Gumdrop in Drive, and trundle off.

I'd like to see the bit of video following the last one, to see if the person in the L300 can make it up that hilll a bit better than the guy in L400 (he kept getting stuck on that one rock instead of going around it - duh!).
