some delicas in japan are now going for $4000 which to us seems laughably low, but keep in mind nobody in japan would even consider paying that for a 15 year old vehicle, those prices are completely driven by foreign buyers (us). also keep in mind that $4000 still leaves that vehicle sitting on the auction grounds, they need to be shipped to the dock, put on a boat, cleared through customs, made compliant, etc etc.

I bid on 2 Delicas a year and half ago that went up to $5650 and the other went $4900 or close to it. They were very low km, still under Shaken, one owner, non smoker vehicles. In other words very rare, they both landed on Candian soil but not in my hands. I know one was sold to a member on here. They were mint. My current one was also close to those prices.

I came out to BC to buy a Pajero for my friend. Our bargaining technique was just to ask the dealer "so what is your best price?" He gave us a number, that is what we paid. Everyone went away happy.

don't underestimate the potential of that technique either... it is a way of asking the seller without being insulting, sure it won't give you the "best haggled price" on all occasions, but it will give you a price lower than asking price on almost any place where they are willing to haggle, without offending those that aren't too much.

no. many are sold after their shaken expires. a vehicle only needs to be under shaken if it is going to be driven, if it's going to be parked in a lot awaiting auction it isn't required.

that said, most aren't expired by too long, simply because it is extremely cost prohibitive to store a vehicle in japan that you aren't using.
