Thanksgiving Deli Camp anyone??

I would think some form of silly game would be order.
Bocce is good, Frisbee, Perhaps hamburger feed part deux. Beer is a pretty good game also.

Have not brought up this issue of family commits but definitely watching the space. Some of it depends what the sister and brother do. I am non commital till of course I commit. Give me a week or so.

Still I am into it. just put a bed box into the van and just commited to help pay for glens kids education. Heading down the 101 for a couple of weeks at the end of the month and dont want to have a meltdown where there are no parts and no deli mechanics, so getting the major tune.

Some 20x12 ft tarps may also be in order not knowing what sort of weather would be in that neighborhood that time of year. To be honest I really have no idea of the terrain around CR even though I have been living on the island on and off for quite some time now. Some blue tarping would be fun

I could easily be talked into a day underground I would think if Konadogs' caver alumni date falls through and he be willing to take some newbs to the World of Og.

Well, if the deli-camp ends up near CR and there are some drivers interested in a little underground look-see, I would be happy to take some "newbs"("Quigee" in caver parlance) on a little tour of some friendly caves

I've been invited on a motorbike trip down to California that week but it will involve the expense of extending the insurance on my bike, new back tire, kennelling the dog.... still waffling.

CR area sounds great. In the event of bad weather we could always set up camp in front of the Riptide Pub?

Hi Kathy Brian Seiko & Tundra,

We're packing our portable wood stove and some huge tarps we have. We suggest you get a big huge flat spot, not individual sites, so we can all be together, not in separate groups.

We did this group thing at Harrison Lake, worked great. The first deli's start "Circling the Wagons" around a big tarp over the centre area, with one communal fireplace / cook area so we can eat together. Adrock did his communal sushi, I did the communal rice-crispy squares, others shared stuff too. All very matey.

Harrison site had a porta-potty so that was good. But the best part was just a big area, with a few trees to ties tarp to, so .... we vote for just a clearing in the bush, not a pay campsite.

Further info in response to Christine & Jay's post, apparently Orchard Meadow Rec site on Fry Lakeis a large open area, with room to "circle the wagons" and hang tarps. I spoke to my CR guy just this morning, and he says the site was rebuilt this year, all new tables, fire rings, and most importantly, NEW biffies!

We've never been to that site, and my mapping ability is pretty abysmal, so maybe someone else can do that to get good directions.

I need to send him an email with an approximate of how many of us will be there, just to dot the i's and cross the t's (it is run by government, after all). Not asking anyone to sign their firstborn away, but a rough count of who's going would be great. I'd rather overestimate and explain than underestimate and justify.

Fry Lake is nice and close for us, and close to a few nice little caves too. I can see us coming out for an evening visit and then home for the night and then me returning solo the next morning for any that want to see a cave or do a back country drive, or both. Will still anti-up for any camp fees though

Excellent Kona, can you provide the best directions to get there, say from the junction of the Parkway? When I mapped it on Yahoo, the directions said to drive almost to Sayward (?!?) then hit the logging roads for a total trip of 89 km.

I know THAT isn't the best way!

Just trying to work out if it's shorter on Menzies Main or stay on the highway and come in by Loveland Bay, or....is there a road that goes over Strathcona Dam Rd?

Not sure, but I'm pretty sure the Strathcona dam road is closed for upgrading of the dam... In which case (and it's a toss up anyway), the best route is to stay on the inland Hwy. to the Campbell River bridge (Chevron at the corner) and turn left onto #28 and start heading towards Gold River. At the top of the big hill (2-ish kms from the intersection) turn right (towards Elk Falls) where the hwy takes a hard left corner. Cross the John Hart dam and go about 1/2 a click or so and turn left onto the gravel Brewster Lake road and head out to Loveland Bay Prov. Park. Carry on a little past the park and turn left onto Lower Campbell Lake road. Fry Lake is the little lake just past the end of Lower Campbell. If you have the BC Backroad Mapbook the route is on page 47 - 48 with Fry Lake near the bottom of page 47. Orchard Meadow Rec Site

Fry Lake is at: (N50 01 30.2 W125 34 39.9) ~ Google Earth that coordinate. I haven't established where to find Orchard Meadow Rec. Site as of yet. Kona, where on the lake is the camp site?

On the North side, off the Lower Campbell Lake road. Also, in the next day or two I will find out for sure whether or not the Strathcona dam road will be open 'cause that route would mean a lot less gravel road to access the site. It is a right turn off the Gold River hwy., across the dam onto Greenstone Rd. and another right onto Lower Campbell Lake Rd. at Fry Lake.

I was told Orchard Meadow because it is the larger site, and suitable for circling the delis and hanging tarps all round. We may be +20 when all is said and done, so I think that's the way to go. Info about the Strathcona Road would be great.
