You get a glimpse of God.

I have never taken the tranny apart but I can count and have done so often. From a standing stop (at a light) I have counted the shifts with the O/D on as I accelerate onto the highway and I count four. Considering I am already in gear when I start... 1+4=....
I'm with you Falco 5. Hope you outing goes well this weekend

Cheers Jeff

I'm pretty sure that last shift is the torque converter locking up, I had my kick down disconnected for a while and I counted 4 gears with OD. but I could be wrong.

The fact that the automatic transmission is a 4 speed is well-documented. The extra "shift" is the torque converter locking up.

On the highway I drive like a Greyound bus driver.

I had a discussion with DeliCat regarding driving styles and I thought it would be a good topic for open discussion.

  • How do you hold the wheel?
bus driver style. it just feels right.
  • How do you use your mirrors?
same as driving our LHD. but i get better vision with the Delica
  • How much do you use your gears?
auto, OD for down hills and if timed right up hills
  • How do you use your brakes?
    i brake earlier. no ABS.
  • When do you start signalling when changing lanes?
alot earlier then my LHD. i just feel i need to. don't know why though.
  • What about driving on a loose surface road or even off road?
loose surface slow. sometimes those potholes surprise me.
off road, if i know the road I practice (play) control sometimes.
  • What about the weather?
LHD or RHD i drive slower now then 20yrs ago. it must be the age thing.
ok, maybe the dad thing or mature thing.
  • What questions do you have regarding driving styles?

Let's get into detail here :-D

Margal is on it - 4 speed auto with locking torque converter....feels like 5 speed.
Had a solenoid that controlled the torgque converter lockup croak once on a 1988 Grand Am - completely dead. Couldn't move the car - like she was stuck in 5th gear no matter what gear the selector was in...couldn't start, or move the car. About a $100 repair though when it happened - the tow cost more!!!!
