ADSL is very consistent but in my experience it is consistently slow unless you are really close to the telephone exchange

Distance hasn't been much of an issue for ADSL in the city in a couple of years now, the "exchange" has moved to a small green box on the street corner these days.

What a great discussion: off topic and on an automotive forum!
Educational and quite questionable at the same time.
Now I wonder if there is any correlation between Delica's and IT industry?

I guess I should have said something about the use. I got the laptop for my wife for her business from home.

She will be handling payroll for a mining company, so I wanted to segregate her stuff from mine. large programs , transferring of file from the company office book keeping stuff.

Thanks for the input - I have to read through all this. I was leaning towards Linksys.

I work for IBM in burnaby and we have both and more.

You would be shocked at the high cost of the DSL lines coming in.

Business DSL and residential DSL are VERY different.

I forgot to mention that it definitely matter where you live, the phone lines inside your house and from/to the box out in the street.

With Shaw cable, if you get the residential internet with the high speed package, I get consistent 14-15 megabyte/sec download rate and 1.2-1.5 upload rate.

Telus can't match that in my area, mostly due to the large number of residential units and old phone lines.

If you live out in the boonies and have a solid line to your house and good lines within your house, DSL makes sense.

If you live in the city, then Shaw is the better option.

With that said, customer service is the same with both. Lucky one day and crappy the next.

Also both can drop packets and service really at any time.

Consistency is the one thing that Shaw is completely incapable of, and that TELUS is by design.
ADSL has a single line to your house, your speeds are the same day and night, from the time the service is installed and forever more.
Cable on the other hand may peak at slightly higher speeds, but every minute the speeds can be vastly different, if your neighbour's kid is hogging bandwidth, you don't get any.

There is a reason that almost all business internet is on ADSL and not Cable.

a word on wep/wpa, if you can, set up MAC address filtering(which will allow you to set what accesses your router by the unique signature found on each piece of equipment you want to add), as the encryption tends to slow internet transfers more than the router class (G,N, B)

At work we have Shaw cable internet, and it's fast. But we pay for that speed, more than a residential customer would.

My home internet is Telus ADSL. It's fast (though not as fast as Shaw at its fastest), and the data rates are more consistent than Shaw.

Both are fast enough for streaming video, VoIP (I'm playing with Asterisk at work), and similar functions.

If you decide you don't need N, imo the Linksys WRT54GL is the best deal going. It is often available for less than $40 and can be loaded with 3rd party software and is solid as a rock.

Golfcart...not sure where in the ditch you live but....When we first moved here we had shaw for service with a dlink router......bandwidth was next to nil and slow as snot during "peak times" switched to telus and kept the dlink....speeds/bandwidth never changes even running 2 laptops and 2 desktops usually with at leat 2 of these downloading torrents. just my useless 2 cents!

As already mentioned below, if you are with Telus, you can get their Gateway model, which is one unit of both modem and wireless router. I have had one for about a year, and it works beautifully. Otherwise, I'd check out Craig's list. Lots for sale there.

If you are with Telus, you can get their Enhanced, which is very fast. According to http://www.speedtest.net/, I get 2560 kb/s download and 447 kb/s upload, which is just about enough to keep up with the posts here on the forum...

The discussion of wireless security reminded me of a thread on Slashdot (http://www.slashdot.org) a couple of years ago on wireless security and access.

The most diabolical setup was somebody whose wifi was wide open, and anybody could connect to it. If the owner connected, everything worked fine. If anybody else connected and attempted to surf the web, all the images were blurry. Until the modem goes squirrely and speed varies minute-to-minute from normal to zero. Fortunately Green1 knew exactly the problem (common on that revision of that modem) so I didn't have to spend hours having tech support work their checklists and finally suggesting that I should change my socks to fix the problem. New modem (speedtouch from Thomson) and all is good.

Im just off 203 in McKinney Creek area. Shaw has been pretty good of late but did experieince alot of interuptions due to system upgrades last year.

I went with the Linksys WRT 160N model - seems to work ( and the wife is happy)
