I agree with "Devil's Advocat" in that I would not want to see "somebody" parking their winnebago or so for weeks on end - especially if they don't live around here...

But being my "own advocate" again: If they chose to run the plates prior to writing a ticket they'd know exactly that I live right there... and again - the city employee actually suggesting to move the van a few meters or go around the block once and park right were I was before is just ridiculous.

Aside from that - in December when there was so much snow here in the lower mainland there was a sunfire with a flat front tire parked in front of my building for approximately 3 weeks - this guy never got neither a warning nor a ticket... again: The sunfire doesn't stand out, but the Delica does...

So I continue to believe that this is a messed up system.

I got a letter back from the city, telling me that they received my initial letter and that they're working on it.... whatever that means...

I will follow-up once I get the final response.....

Cheers, Chris

Green1 wrote:most cities have a similar bylaw, luckily though ours is "complaint driven" which means unless your neighbour is a jerk you can park as long as you want.
I also live in Calgary, and I would say "unluckily". If your neighbour IS a jerk ... like mine. Of course, he parked his truck for 2 years without moving. That is why I like a reasonable bylaw. Oh, Calgary cleans the streets 2x per year, brags about it, puts up huge signs to warn you, but don't even ticket vehicles then. Why not?

I used to live in Montreal, and there they do most streets once or twice a week, and each side on a different day, so you can easily move. And they definitely ticket if you park during the 1 hour window, which pays for the cleaning. You end up with clean streets with people who can't read paying for it. But they don't ticket if they don't sweep, and they also don't sweep from Dec to May (I think it's May). But during those times you have the snow removal -- something Calgary doesn't know how to do ... <noise of rant being stiffled>.

I think in Calgary the bylaw is 36 hours, 72 if you are out-of-town.

With all the greenwash all the governments do, you would think a 2-week or 3-week limit would stop the dead cars on the street without screwing up those whose vehicles are weekenders.

One last point from my side - and then I will rest my case...

After all, I have my vehicle registered/licensed and I pay for it (through ICBC) - and enough I might add...

So - of course, if somebody wants to park their garbage junk-cars on the street without insurance etc. then the law should be enforced full on. But if somebody has insurance / license on the vehicle and parks in front of the building they live in (i.e. "at home") then I think the municipality should give them a break...

Anyway, that's my story and I am sticking to it...

Cheers, Chris

there's actually a seperate law for uninsured/unregistered vehicles, they aren't allowed to be parked on the street at all, ever.

Although I had said I was gonna rest my case.... I just got the letter back from the city of North Van.... yes, you guessed right... no mercy from the authorities:

With the goal of keeping traffic flowing etc.. they have to ticket people or else everybody would use public roads as private parking space... well if my van would fit into the underground parkade I would have it off the street immediately for parking...

Just talked to the building manager: Apparently when I park on 6th (one down from Keith - on the south side of the building) they never issue tickets there... she parks there all the time - except Tuesdays when the street sweeper comes by...

Weird stuff...

Anyway. Now I will defintively rest my case and not annoy anybody anymore with that dreadful issue....

Cheers, Chris

without knowing your particular building it's hard to say, however many buildings have some room off the street that can become a parking spot, you'd have to work with your building manager and see what can be done. At the apartment I used to rent there was a space off the back lane that we used (my roomate's van was too tall for the parkade) it wasn't officially a parking stall, and eventually building managment (who weren't very nice people) fenced it off so we couldn't use it, but that's the sort of thing that can work for 1 off situations where a vehicle won't fit in the normal areas. I know another building around here where a cube van regularly parks in the approach to the garbage bins, they just know the pick-up schedule and avoid that day.

Driving around there are all sorts of situations like that where a parking stall has been created somewhere that wasn't originally set up to be one... walk around your building with a critical eye for where a delica might be able to squeeze in...

your insurance should be your parking pass for public roads. A license plate and valid tag means you are paying to keep that vehicle drivable. And therefor, have not left it on the street as someone elses problem, while you travel Europe for 6 months.

I have a better idea. Put a 2x4 under your tire, video tape yourself backing up, and then forward to the 2x4, get out, have the date and time stamped on the screen, then rack up a bunch of tickets and really stick it to their "i'm smarter than you" gps system. Its enough to get all your tickets thrown out forever i'd say.

Well, I went to the city hall today. When I got there I told them that due to the economic hardships that everyone has been experiencing that I wanted to donate a quarter of my earnings of the day in question (I made $100.00). They were very grateful for my contribution as the city is also experiencing hardship, you can tell by the shape the infrastructure is in...

On my way to the city hall I saw the mayor in my favourite coffee shop and felt compelled to share my story with him. He listened to everything I had to say about how I was going to donate money to the cause. During my soliloquy I mentioned that a member of our club had received a ticket for parking on Keith for longer than 72 hours, which he agreed that there was a by-law about that ~ but then he added that the city has a policy that they don't ticket unless there has been a complaint, as it costs the city money to do the extra patrolling ~ which made sense to me.

And so the long & short of it: Impalator ~ someone grassed on you.

Falco.

Sure looks like it, Falco.... and here is where the RHD "easy to spot" nature of our vehicles comes to play again...

Even the most retarded ticket patrol person or the most deranged neighbor can distinguish a delica from another car....

Oh well, I guess I shall keep driving around the block every so often to confuse the GPS machine....

Cheers,
Chris
