How does the extra auto fuel tank work?

I've had the LFL come on a couple of times. After varying km, the fillups then took:
68.2
67.1
66.6
67.5
litres.

Mine is a diesel automatic, so 75 L tank. One thing that has always bugged me is no one has ever said if that is total capacity, or usable. Would be nice to know.

always thought that I would have to bleed the fuel pump if I ran out, guess running out and running dry are two different things.

apparently there is a float in the tank that will block the fuel line when you run out of fuel, this prevents air from getting in to the line and therefore you don't need to prime the pump if you run out of fuel (more of the subtle, yet ingenious design of these vehicles)

this is true. it sinks and blocks of the hoses while they are still sunk a little in fuel. then floats up when you get fuel in. the lines never run empty.this float also has a screen that looks to be about 300mu (just a guess) that might plug with WVO in cold weather btw

I have to do some real checking, but mine (auto 4wd) is a 65L tank. Had my light come on once and it took at 58L to fill. I've never filled it passed 60L and my 'limit' is 500km exactly before the light came on. I'm pretty sure the book I have says the light comes on with something like 7L or so.. (can't remember the exact number, but will check when I get home. I'm pretty sure it's <10L tho)

I often have my fuel light on, too lazy to get out in the cold & rain to fill up. It lights when my arrow is BELOW the E line. It shows first only sporadically as I go up or down a hill, or as I whizz around a corner (centrifugal force methinks). I drive until the light stays on solid (another 30 km at least, don't know how far as too chicken to run empty -- then I'd have to WALK in the cold & rain).

Unless you've run out, I question your assertion that it's only a 65 litre tank, you said the light came on at 58L, that's not out of the ordinary even for a 75 L tank, especially depending on how you fill. Diesel foams quite a bit, so if you hang up the hose when it cuts out you miss quite a bit of capacity, you have to wait for the foam to settle, and then fill the rest of the way.

now if you ran dry and were only able to squeeze 65 L in, then I'd be inclined to agree, but near as I can tell, the 4x4 diesel automatic transmissions all have the 75 L dual tank system (it's also easy to check, the 65 L tank is only one tank, the 75 L is in 2 tanks)

I know mine is the dual tank, and I've put 68L in before so I know it's more than 65...

Ran it dry going up Sheep Creek Hill - great longboarding hill - died 500 meters from the crest. A kind soul lent me a ride and a can. Put 10 liters (measured at pump) from jerry can, 64 at the pump.

That's fair; the light came on and the needle was right in the middle of the E "band". Fill up was 58L to just above the F "line". I always wait for the foam action to stop and repeat twice, just for that reason. Couldn't have filled anymore. It *IS* a two tank system, so I'm not too sure how I'm missing +15 Litres. I've run it close to E many times, and never was it above 60L.

As mentioned, I'm going to start looking into this more. Next time I'm at CVI I'll get them to weigh in with their thoughts... Maybe there's a few kilos of drugs in the fuel tank and that's taking up the space, eh? :P

The "E" is just a rough indicator and not an absolute measure - for sure you have 75 liter capacity, just like all the rest of the autos out there. As for the drugs in the tank, more likely it would be a few liters of sludge...

As I said previously in this thread: The most I have put in is 68 litres, but my light comes on at roughly 58 litres. I have seen the needle go below "E" on more than one occasion on this machine and on many others. I have always regarded the "E" as a sort of guideline ~ a sort of "maybe it's time to put some fuel in" reminder.

I`ve read that some 4x4 diesel automatic transmissions have 65 L tank & I suspect that mine 1997 is the one.

There's an easy way to check, look underneath, if you have 2 fuel tanks it's 75 L, 1 tank it's only 65.

We haven't seen any 1997 L300s in Canada yet, (they won't be legal for import for another 3 years) so we're not exatly experts on them... It wouldn't entirely surprise me though because after 1994 the L300s started being a lot more stripped down as Mitsubishi tried to convince people to buy the L400 instead.
