I still paid less and got more CCA... so I'm still a happy camper...

Near as I can tell AGM still have a ways to go in price point before they become useful for general use.

You're right. They still cost a pretty penny.

I needed space (single instead of a pair) and a battery I could depend on when we're solo off the beaten path.

For $200 bucks, I couldn't find a pair of batteries that even touch a single odyssey for reliability.

But not everyone needs 'extreme' type batteries.

As an example, you can't run these down (discharge) and kill them. They just charge right back.

Standard batteries can't do that.

I've owned many a vehicle, went through different types of batteries and worked for 2 years back when I was little'r in a battery shop.

The high CCA labels on many batteries is a marketing ploy.

The times I've spend $50-80 bucks on battery to get shafted on the 'claimed' CCA's, I honestly can't count.

Coming from the horses's mouth, owner of Polar, with no bias he said you get what you pay for with batteries. He said the two things people ask 99% of the time are about price and CCA's. Not about the quality, testing nor field feedback on them.

There are good quality batteries out there. These Odyssey one's just happen to be a very high quality and safe power source that is proven in the field. The only downside is that they cost twice of what an average single battery costs.

Well, considering that due to my current starting issue I have to crank for over 3 full minutes at -20c and my current pair of batteries do this with no issues (in fact the engine is spinning at 500rpm from that little starter motor), and in fact a couple weeks ago I did it twice without running long enough for any real recharge (had to pull vehicle forward 10 feet to get it out of the way of someone else, then let sit overnight again before driving home)

I'd say that these batteries are far exeeding any and all expectations that I might have for a battery.

And I hate to say it, if you run your battery flat in the middle of nowhere, it doesn't matter if it's AGM or not, you still need a boost to get going, and that's going to be a far more pressing issue... I would depend on these batteries off the beaten path with no worries at all.
space, that is the only advantage I've seen so far, but I can always find other places to squeeze things in.

Actually, in the SW, but heck, what's a little detail like that amongst friends. They are in the Marda Loop area. They haven't fixed my leaking injection pump, but they have narrowed it down to the gasket between the top and bottom. Now I'll get a rebuild kit, and they'll put it in. It may be taking time, but they haven't charged an arm and a leg either.

Glad to hear Kirkham got you going. They're good at doing that.

Im just looking through your posted link there jesse, and im having trouble seeing where you order online. Once you go to Canadian dealers, it tells you where one is on Vancouver island, but it does not have a corresponding website for that dealer. Did you call in to get that price quote or did you just know from past experience?

Im liking the idea have a battery that can die over and over again and not actually be dead.

Hi Pat,
Polar Batteries is in Burnaby, on Boundary Road (the boundary of Burnaby and Vancouver). Great place, many deli's have bought from them, Jay and I have bought lots over the year. They will also repack electronics batteries with new guts.

Polar Battery Vancouver Ltd.
1258 Boundary Road, Burnaby, BC Canada V5K 4T6
Telephone: (604) 294-1891 / 294-1892
Fax: (604) 298-0111
Toll Free: 1-800-363-3550
Email: info@polarbattery.com

But Patty, ALL batteries have a preset limited number of recharges, they don't have Miraculous Powers. So, first figure out why your first one went bad, otherwise a new expensive one will fry also. One 27 or two 24 batteries will fit the delica battery box. Jay prefers one 27 series as it has better CCA (that means Cold Cranking Amperage, what you care about for starting). He prefers lead acid rather than gel or mat, as the good old basic battery is very sturdy, and cheaper so when it starts to die you will buy a replacement right away rather than try to keep a dying gel going for a bit longer because it cost so much.

PM us if you need, send digital photos of your battery setup.

Christine.

Sorry to bring up a dead discussion here, but better than making a new one :)

Jesse, is the Odyssey PC1500 still your recommendation as the best single battery for the deli? I've got a 2 year old optima red-top but I've killed it about 5 times now due to either forgetfulness (lights) or a mystery drain I seem to have happening. If fully charge it with a 6A charger, but then leave it in the van parked for a week, it is dead.

I think there is a drain somewhere (cheap subwoofer auto power circuit, my back hatch doesn't know when it's shut, although only the red dash light is on, etc) and I am systematically finding that, but it seems the battery is getting pretty weak as well. I keep a solar panel trickle charging it and it seems to put out a good 12v @ 2a-4a but it's still dead if I leave it for a week.

I called Polar Battery and they have the PC1500 for $270, so if you still advise that it's the best, I'll bite the bullet and get one.

Thanks for all the super helpful advice and debate guys :)

don't forget to check the alternator, the regulator or what ever it's called has gone on a couple of other vans and it drains the battery when the van is off.
