Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
I have the turbofyner on mine and I'm very happy how it performs. I also added the thermo-switch which switches automatically to veggie once it reaches proper temperature, usually 3-5 min from cold start. During the day, even if my van sits for 2-3 hrs and my temp gauge is way down (in cold zone) it will switch over to veggie almost right away. If I didn't have that thermo-switch I'd probably waste another 5 min waiting for the temp. gauge to climb...
But if I'd do it again I'd buy the new version 'cause the fittings on mine never align properly and drip a bit of coolant if I use my block heater. Otherwise no problem at all!

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
Thanks David, yes the ORB (O ring Boss) fittings on the new version are nice, you just need to be aware that you do need to use one straight fitting, usually on the fuel-out is best, the other 3 can be elbows. So, just need a bit of clearance for the straight fitting and hose-radius. If you are having trouble with a coolant leak on an ORB fitting that you just can't quite get tight enough (and will not go one more turn), you might remove it one nice day and apply another generous layer of the Permatex white high temp thread sealant and try it again. Often that will do the trick. The brass fittings help, too - you can get them tighter than the plastic ones without rounding them off with the wrench.

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
Oh, just one last note on the thermoswitch (SVSW50C)...it switches when the coolant at the filter is at 50C.
There is a 1/8" NPT port on the VM2 filter into the coolant chamber for this to thread in directly.
On the TurboFyner, we have to use a bushing but it can be installed there, too. Or in a tee fitting somewhere else in the coolant loop if you prefer.
---
Ok hope you all have a good weekend! Spring is almost upon us up here in the Southern Interior...I hope! It sure has been great to have my Delica this winter, I've needed it just to get in and out my driveway! The tight turning circle is nice.

We have lots of the original 5 micron water-absorbing type on hand at this time.

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
Just an update on the VM2 - redesigned with a nicer looking matte (versus the former shiny) finish to the aluminum filter base. These filters have proven themselves in the coldest winter conditions across Canada. They heat up FAST and quickly thaw a frozen element of WVO and allow full flow, even from coolant that is not fully up to temp, and electric heater elements are not needed. We offered that option at one time. One dealer used to use them, in (bbrrr) Alberta. He found they were simply not needed with this design. Made in BC.

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
Okay, so I know the reason for heating WVO, especially if you live a bit past the 50th or 51st parallel, but why would one want to heat diesel fuel?
I realise this thread is in the WVO section, but most of the initial responses were about products for the diesel market and how the WVO market is too small for heaters above 45 degrees.
Just wondering...

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
You need to heat WVO regardless of where you live, even in summer - you are aiming for about 80C by the time the WVO gets to the injectors, for proper combustion. A heated filter is one link in what you might call a heating chain...some heat at the tank, a bit along the fuel line path, some more at the filter, then a final heat exchanger or electric heater (Vegtherm), or both, is how we do it.
This is not for heating diesel fuel. Normally, on a 2-tank system, your stock diesel fuel filter stays in place and is not heated.

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
I think he is asking why there are so many heated filters and sure out there from companies that have nothing to do with WVO and just Diesel, like Racor (Parker), if you don't need to heat diesel. I think the answer is that some times it helps to heat diesel, in cold weather diesel will start to gel hence winter diesel and such so some big rigs, and boats and industrial machines and such add a heated filter to help out.
I hope that answers you question.

Thanks loki. That WAS the point of my question: there seemed to be plenty of diesel fuel heaters, none of which were apparently hot enough for WVO.loki wrote:I think he is asking why there are so many heated filters and sure out there from companies that have nothing to do with WVO and just Diesel, like Racor (Parker), if you don't need to heat diesel. the racor 6400N and 6401N are pretty nice, I'm getting a 6400N as the 6401N has a thermostat controlled valve on the coolant heat that shuts off around 80°C, I'm going to add a manual valve that I can shut off when I plan to run just dino for a bit. I will have to move my extra fuel pump as this filter is for vacuum operation so I need to put the pump after it. on the plus side having the pump up by my IP will hopefully emulsify any water into the fuel keeping it from doing any harm so long as it burns before it gets a chance to settle.

Re: Best HEATED Fuel Filter
How much is a 6400? The prices online seem to be upwards of $500.
And, why pay for a thermostat that shuts things off at 80C (are you sure it's C, not F?), when the coolant will seldom get the filter above that (90C at engine, say, less some allowance for heat losses on the way to the filter and heat loss at the filter itself)

I'm not getting the one with the thermostat (6401N) and 80°C is what the Parker/Racor guy said the coolant heater will shut off at. Probably because the flash point of Diesel is lower than WVO and also Diesel is thinner and doesn't need as much heat to get it to a good viscosity. That is why I'm opting for the cheaper and, I believe, better for the application 6400N. as for price, My dad owns a yacht repair company and I'm getting it for cost (if anything) I think it's a little over $250, if any one is interested I could get a solid price and order it for them.
