It's actually 3/4" Sandeply Hardwood Plywood. It looks exactly the same as Birch, but is $5 cheaper per sheet. They actually only charged me for one sheet instead of two, so I guess price didn't really matter. Didn't realize until I got home or I would have actually said something.

As for saving weight...as you can see we built the base using 5 pieces of wood instead of a solid piece. We also made the bottom of the drawers using 1/4" and same for the "top" of the lower section over the drawers.

With the drawers out, my wife can take it out and put it in on her own. Oh, and I can do it too

This design also allows us to flip the rear bench seat up and behind the captains chairs without removing the drawer system...just incase we have extra gear to bring along.

Local supplier for this kind of lumber (birch or otherwise) is Windsor Plywood. They have a really good sale on birch and poplar 4x8 sheets right now. Make sure they don't take you to the Baltic Birch sheets in the back, cause that's like twice the price (it's voidless furniture grade).

Lower Mainland Home Depots don't carry any dense ply like this (they do back east) although some stores do have some hardwood veneered panels which are twice the price of Windsor Ply's and not as good quality.

Great idea...I will look into that. There are 6 hooks on the mosquito net...four corners and two in the center, but it does still sag a little. We're both pretty small so it doesn't matter too much but it would be nicer for sure.

Good to know. I went there already a few times, but I didn't know that much about the different kinds of plywood. It looks like this time I'll go with poplar and a different construction to save a lot of weight.
