the HDJ81 is the only one with this issue although the HZ and PZ engines could be vunerable as well...

I dunno guys....I have an hdj81v with over 270,000kms on her. I am not sure if the BEB's have been done but the truck runs amazing and gets staggering fuel eco. As long as the timing hasn't been advanced too far, I wouldn't bee too concerned about the bearings. It kinda sucks that the Landcruiser weighs more than my L400, out accelerates it, out 4x4's it, and still gets better mpg..... I love the L400 but if I didn't have sooooo many children the hdj would be my hands down fav....Kev.

okay, just so i am clear on this, you are suggesting that a $600-$1000 bearing job is:
"As long as the timing hasn't been advanced too far, I wouldn't bee too concerned about the bearings" a non-concern? am i correct in this understanding?

how does timing, in your opinion, have a bearing on the BEB concerns?

even though Oz, Britain and in Canada there are examples that show this is a reality, you are suggesting, recommending, that it sould be ignored? even though IF the BEB go south that it is a $6500 to $10,000 repair job that this concern is not a concern in your opinion, am i correct in this understanding?

even though you do not know the history of your engine and whether or not the BEB have been changed, you are making light of this potentially expensive concern. am i correct in this understanding of your post?

side question, since reported fuel milage on average in Canadian driven HDJ81s is mid to low 20s what is your truck "gets staggering fuel eco" mileage?

I think you have a valid point, but I think you can put in such a way that it isn't so bloody condescending.

I re-read my post and i didn't find it condencending ... well ... okay ... maybe a little.

isn't asking questions leading to the poster reviewing his post and thinking about the points better than "you are ignorant. you are about to lead others into POSSIBLE expensive repairs" ??

You can get a lot more umph advancing the timing. It's not hard to do either, so that's where I think the problem lies. Add a couple of turns on a screw on the injection pump and you can see more than a 40hp increase. Doing the bearings is a couple of hours and not a lot if money. Good insurance for a low km cruiser. It's the injection pump and injectors that you should be concerned about. If the cold start advance lever gives way inside the pump, it will tear it apart. The tips of the injectors can break off after 100,000kms and destroy the engine. Raj at Fred Holmes injection (who rebuilt my pump) knows every nut and screw on the HDJ80 pump. I would rebuild the pump at 200,000kms and if you don't live in a stupid cold province have the cold start lever removed upon rebuild. The injectors should be done asap.
Add an electric fan and you should see mileage of 30 mpg city/highway. Keep it under 110km/h and I see about 33 mpg highway. Truck never does worse than 25 mpg.
I drive 400-500kms/day so this kind of mileage has been proven week in and week out.
