go read my threads. i used to cut in to the hoses where they tee off sorta behind the starter. but easier is at the rear heaters. do NOT put your heat exchanger down there where you have photographed. the cool air blowing by will take all the heat away. put it up in the engine compartment like all of mine. tip: completely remove the 'hood' for easier access. it is bolted on at the hinges.
what are you using for tees?
you know, you dont have to tee. you can cut only one hose and install the heater inline.

although i see now that this particular install thread doesnt demonstrate where i hooked in to the coolant lines

well crap. I already tee'd in and installed it there. i wondered about the cool air thing. i also thought it might be bad for river crossings... but i did it, and now feel more confident that i can find coolant lines and splice into them. so i'll move it this morning.
After reading and studying your threads for hours... (cant get the pictures to work on one... where it says something like 'here's a picture of where i tee'd into the coolant lines"... )My first attempt in mounting the heat exchanger was to mount it where you did, i made a bracket out of a piece of angle iron, took off the hood, and bolted it on. i thought it looked a bit close to the engine. and upon startup, the knocking sound was scary and unbearable. the heat exchanger i have is bigger than the ones in your pictures, and i can't seem to fit it there without it hanging dangerously close to the engine.
So, i'll go out, and un tee where i did... perhaps mounting in front of the battery? where the coolant overflow is/was?
afteroil, thanks for your encouragement! I now figure even if it takes me a week to install this thing myself, i'll learn a crap tonne, and feel more confidant working on stuff.
I'm also going to purge the coolant lines today. it'll be easier to work on lines without stuff squirting out at me everywhere... vinegar huh? thanks for the tip! I'll do exactly as posted! thanks enviro!

I made a nice little bracket to fit the heat exchanger in there this morning...

any ideas? i'm prepping the spot the coolant overflow was, it might have to go in there.

battery compartment is too far from the injectors. the oil wont be hot enough by the time it gets there.
try flipping the heat exchanger up so it doesnt hang down, but instead sideways.. yuh know? like point the side with the brand name embossed in it down towards the ground...
or, with some ingenuity, you might get be able to squeeze it down between the rad and the timing belt cover

how many degrees do you expect the oil temperature to drop from the heat exchanger to the pump and injectors if placed in the battery compartment? that IP pump flows fuel at a very quick rate....

here's this afternoon's work so far:
I welded up a bracket for the heat exchange... two pieces of bed frame.


put it in sideways as afteroil suggested...


here's how much clearance i get...


and here's the installed return valve.

i expect them to drop many degrees because i have seen it do that.

how many? less than 5, more than 20...

todays work...
doesn't seem like much, but hey, it's my first time, so i'm gunna go slow.


coolant lines running through heat exchanger. wow it gets hot! and no leaks!!! yet...



my relays, temporarily mounted and almost all wired up.


and here's where i tee'd in to the cooland lines. no leaks!


I also mounted the veg pump near the rear air conditioning/heat unit, as i plan to remove it and use the coolant going into it to heat the tank and veg line.
no pic though, as it is now dark, and i dont feel like crawling under there right now. i used enough bandaids today, and dont want to have to use one on my head.

more tomorrow: buying fuses? buying fuel line. finishing wiring, mounting filter, hosing up the tank if i have time.

SO the tank is mounted, it looks like Sh*t, but it's secure and up there.
welded a cage for the marine tank. it doesn't fit as snugly as i had hoped.
i have a line on a different tank, but we'll see if it fits.

I Ran the lines for the tank, i removed the rear air conditioning and used the coolant lines to heat the lines and the tank.

I'm not sure what i'll do with all the space where the ac was. perhaps a tool box? my big mucking jack and a shovel? marine batteries? I just don't know yet. perhaps a different thread.

All that's left now is to finish up the last bit of wiring, mount and plumb in the filter, tap into the fuel and flush the lines. A friend may stop by today and help me with that last part, as it's the scariest...
