Definitely go with at least 5W40, I run 0W40 synthetic for trouble free starts here in Manitoba, and I run it year round and frequently do heavy towing (4-6000lbs) in all weather, +30C to -30C. No extra leaks or loss of oil for me. And make sure you have a frost plug style block heater, or circulating heater that draws coolant from the engine block, and returns it to the head. Not a lower rad hose heater. Those are for quads and snowmachines. The design of both the 2.5l, and 2.8l makes the lower rad hose heater useless. The thermostat is on the lower rad hose, and does not allow the heated coolant to circulate into the engine. And the amount of heat transferred to the engine by conduction is minimal. If you have good batteries, a proper functioning glow plug system, and 0W40 synthetic oil in an l400 with the 2.8l, you should have no trouble starting down to -30C with out being plugged in. (I do recommend you plug it in if you can, but it will start fine) The l300's with 2.5l can do this too, but not as easily as the 2.8l's

My oil usually is bought from Part Source on Macleod Trail just north of Heritage. Usually it is Shell Rotella, but I've also bought Amsoil, which might have been 0w40.

I buy my air, fuel, and oil filters from GreatWest Kenworth.

Then I have Kirkham install it all. (Except the air filter, I do that myself.)

Since the thread seems to be dominated with oil chat....

I recently did some price comparisons on oil across a few Calgary locales
Shell Rotella T 15W40 non synthetic
5L jug 16.99 - 25.00
18.9 L 65.00 - 75.00

The cheapest prices was NOT the Walmarts or any other chain store....It was at Fort Garry Truck supply but it was a short sale item for them so prices have probably been bumped up a little since last week.

Getting oil in bulk is far cheaper and my next price check is the bulk lube suppliers that are operated by Shell and PetroCanada in South Calgary. Could be even cheaper for the pails. Will be checking on Friday and shall post prices then.

I run 0-30 synth. rotella and it is good on real cold days but leaks like crazy..... i've had to replace my oil pressure sensor 4 times in the last two years cause it blows all over the place my driveway looks like an oil slick.... but when i put sumer oil in i don't seem to have that problem.... what gives...

Mine's the same but not that the same extent, I've been told the thinner oil works it's way out through the seals in warmer conditions.

Yeah it's not the best helmet I ever owned but definitely the best-looking helmet I ever owned! 6 years I've worn it and while fairly noisy, it's got lots of cool factor.
